It will bethe third play drama teacher Ms. Sabrina Kayed has directed at Hillcrest, with a cast featuring two Cappies nominees (a prestigious high school theatre award) . Everyone is familiar with Dracula’s iconic Transylvanian accents and striking fashion. Although this production retains some of these traditional elements, it also puts anew spin on it. For example, many lines are read as recounted diary entries, as they appear in the original novel. As Liam Hart, student director and actor, puts it, “because Dracula is such an old story, it allows for several different approaches in interpretation. I think that we’re presenting it in a way that people will really enjoy.” As the show approaches, there’s a buzz in Hillcrest’s halls.“The production is a whole school effort. We have tech students constructing set pieces—including a full-sized coffin—anda poster design assignment in a grade 9 business class,” says Ms. Kayed. Students are also helping with sound design, costumes, makeup, social media publicity, and photography. Ms. Kayed says,“That’s my favourite thing about theatre. It requires many people with very diverse skills coming together to make something happen.”Dracula runs from March 11 to 13 at 7 p.m. with doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.
