STEM COLLEGIATE NEWS 01. J a n I n a u g u r u a r y 2 0 2 4 a l E d i t i o n STEM News Volume 1, Issue 1 January 2024 WELCOME TO STEM COLLEGIATE’S NEW NEWSPAPER! First Edition Welcome to the inaugural edition of STEM Collegiate’s newspaper. The newspaper is written, edited, and published by STEM Collegiate’s Writing Club. We publish every two months, and our next edition will be out at the beginning of March. What to Expect In every edition, we will include arecap of the last few months, as well as important upcoming dates and events. We will cover the latest news and interesting things going on around the school. We will also include student work, such as artwork, photography, short stories, poems, and other writing. We will incorporate student suggestions as well! Naming Contest We need a proper name for the paper and would love your suggestions! We have only three rules: 1. That all names submitted are appropriate. 2. That the names submitted make sense. 3. That our name is better than our sister school in Calgary’s newspaper the Stemia Scoop. STEM News Volume 1, Issue 1 January 2024 STEM STAFF TAKES A WIN, BUT STEM STORM ARE THE REAL CHAMPIONS Pictured: Senior Girls team, with coach Ms. Terkper. Friendly competition In a final culmination of the volleyball season, STEM Storm faced off against a motley crew of STEM Collegiate teachers on Friday, December 1st. Excited students gathered in the gym, eager to cheer on their classmates. Some even came prepared, holding signs filled with encouraging words, ready to support their peers. Mr. Chambers was reported assaying that he played middle on his high school volleyball team. Ms. Dyck, when asked how her soccer skills translate to volleyball, said “I transferred the power from my feet to my hands.” While the staff won in the end, STEM Storm put up a good fight, with the final score landing at 23-13. Volleyball season comes to an end STEM Collegiate was proud to have three volleyball teams this season, coached by Ms. Dyck and Ms. Terkper. For many of the players on the Junior Girls team, it was their first time ever touching a volleyball. Playing tripleball allowed everyone to get lots of technical practice in, and Ms. Dyck said the team improved significantly by the end of the season. Despite facing against more established teams, the Junior Girls held their heads high and worked hard. The coaches reported some excellent plays by the Junior Boys team, and the Senior Girls had the honor of hosting our first ever home game. The Senior Girls placed fifth in their tournament, and Ms. Terkper was very proud of them, saying that they were a joy to coach. Congratulations to the STEM Storm volleyball players on a great season! One was dark and dramatic, while the other one was about chili dogs. And the same guy played Sonic in both shows! “Isn’t that wild?” you might say. “The same guy playing two different versions of the same guy?” What’s even wilder is that this happens with the cast of “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” as they return to voice their respective characters in the new “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” anime!
