Audit and Assurance CPA Handbook Summary/Notes Week 1 – CAS 200-Overall Objectives of the independent auditor and the conduct of an audit in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standards Objective In conducting an audit of financial statements, the overall objectives of the auditor are: 1. To obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, thereby enabling the auditor to express an opinion on whether the financial statements are prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with an applicable financial reporting framework; and 2. To report on the financial statements, and communicate as required by the CASs, in accordance with the auditor’s findings Requirements Ethical Requirements • The auditor shall comply with relevant ethical requirements: o Integrity o Objectivity o Professional competence and due care o Confidentiality o Professional behavior • The auditor is also subject to the relevant independence and other ethical requirements set out in rules of professional conduct Professional Skepticism • The auditor shall plan and perform an audit with professional skepticism • Professional skepticism includes being alert to: o Audit evidence that contradicts other audit evidence obtained o Information that brings into question the reliability of documents and responses to inquiries to be used as audit evidence o Conditions that may indicate possible fraud o Circumstances that suggest the need for audit procedures in addition to those required by the CASs • The auditor may accept records and documents as genuine unless the auditor has reason to believe the contrary • The auditor cannot disregard/ignore past experience with the honesty and integrity of management and those charged with governance Professional Judgment • Professional judgment is necessary to make decisions about: o Materiality and audit risk. o The nature, timing and extent of audit procedures o Evaluating whether sufficient appropriate audit evidence has been obtained o The evaluation of management’s judgments in applying GAAP/other frameworks o The drawing of conclusions based on the audit evidence obtained (i.e. assessing the reasonableness of the estimates made by management) Audit and Assurance CPA Handbook Summary/Notes Week 3 – CAS 250 – Considerations of Laws and Regulations in and Audit of Financial Statements General • Management is responsible for complying with laws and regulations • The auditor is not responsible for preventing non-compliance with or to detect non-compliance with laws The Auditor's Consideration of Compliance with Laws and Regulations • As part of obtaining an understanding of the entity and its environment obtain a general understanding of the laws and regulations applicable to the entity and how the entity is complying with those laws and regulations o Use your own knowledge of business and inquire management to figure this out • Obtain sufficient appropriate audit evidence regarding compliance with laws and regulations that have a direct material effect on the financial statements o Examples: compliance with income tax act, non-compliance with laws leading to fines, litigation • Perform the following two audit procedures to help identify instances of non-compliance with laws that have a material impact on the F/S 1. Inquiring of management and those charged with governance, as to whether the entity is in compliance with such laws and regulations; and 2. Inspecting correspondence with regulatory authorities • During the audit, remain alert to the possibility that other audit procedures may bring instances of non-compliance; therefore, be alert when: o Reading minutes; o Inquiring management and the client’s lawyers regarding litigation, claims and assessments o Performing substantive tests of details • Request management and those char
