Performance is now a business metric, not just a technical one. Google uses Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking factor. Users abandon slow sites and rarely return. The good news: because WordPress gives you full control over hosting, caching, code, and content delivery, it is the platform where smart optimization makes the biggest measurable difference. Google officially calls TTFB “good” at under 800ms, but high-performing WordPress sites target LCP under 1 . 5s, INP under 100ms, and TTFB under 200ms. These are the thresholds that separate fast sites from great ones. | | | Over 800ms | | HOW TO US E T H IS C H EC K L IST
Work through each step in order: they are ordered by impact and dependency. Hosting and caching (Steps 2 and 3) have the largest impact and must be addressed before any frontend optimization, because no amount of image compression can overcome a one-second server response time. Each item has a checkbox so you can print and work through it.

The single most common mistake in performance optimization is making changes without first measuring. Without a baseline, you are guessing which issues matter most for your specific site. Every site has different bottlenecks: one site’s biggest issue is images, another ’s is TTFB, another ’sis JavaScript. Measurement tells you exactly where to start and how to prove improvement. FAQs

Why does WordPress performance matter according to the checklist?

Performance is treated as a business metric, not just a technical concern. Slow sites lead to user abandonment, and Google Core Web Vitals are used directly as a ranking factor.

What Core Web Vitals targets does the checklist recommend?

It defines thresholds for LCP, INP, CLS, and TTFB, emphasizing that high-performing WordPress sites should aim for stricter targets (e.g., LCP under 1.5s, INP under 100ms, and TTFB under 200ms).

What should you do first before making any optimization changes?

Measure first to establish a baseline. Run PageSpeed Insights (Mobile tab) and other measurement tools on key pages so you have before numbers to prove improvement.
