He'd walked this deck before. Dozens of times over the years, arriving for inspections, strategic brieﬁngs, the occasional ceremony that the Emperor's protocols demanded for a ship of this stature. Each time, the hangar had received him the way it received every visiting dignitary—as a space he was passing through on his way to somewhere more important. Temporary. Transactional. It no longer felt transitory or temporary, because it wasn't. This time, the Möbius was his ship. His posting. The place where his career would either recover or conclude. At this moment, he wasn't certain which he preferred. The hangar stretched around him, the overhead lights casting their cold illumination across repair scaffolding and cargo pallets arranged in neat rows along the far bulkhead. Two maintenance crews worked on a boarding craft near the center of the bay—likely one of the craft that had deployed to deliver Marines to the Bastion and failed—their tools producing a rhythmic metallic percussion that echoed off the distant walls. The scale of the space pressed against him the way it always did aboard the Möbius. Not the rational dimensions of a warship's interior but something older, something built by hands that understood scale as a statement rather than a necessity. Commander Ashe waited at the base of the shuttle ramp, hands clasped behind his back, his uniform pressed with the kind of perfection that suggested the man had been ready for this arrival well before the shuttle docked. The executive ofﬁcer's expression remained the same as every other time Sarxes had interacted with him. Neutral to the point of opacity. A face that processed everything and broadcast nothing. Sarxes was grateful for that face. Pity would have been intolerable. Curiosity would have been worse. Ashe offered neither. "General Abrelle. Welcome aboard," he said, offering the inverted hands and a nod that carried exactly the right amount of formality. "Commander." Sarxes returned the gesture and descended the ramp, his boots ﬁnding the deck with the solid certainty of a man who had decided, somewhere during the journey from Delvran, that whatever he felt about this assignment would stay locked behind the same walls that had contained every other private rebellion of his career. "Thank you for receiving me personally." "Of course, sir." Ashe fell into step beside him as they moved away from the shuttle, matching Sarxes's pace without effort. The maintenance crews glanced up as they passed. They straightened and offered the inverted hands. Sarxes acknowledged the gesture with a measured nod and kept walking. "I'd like your assessment of the ship's current readiness," he said. The question came naturally. Assessment was a language he'd spoken for forty years, and right now it was the only language he trusted himself to use.
