Empty We know a missionary sister who while beingtortured by Chinese Communists, made anact of the will totally surrendering her self toGod.This was the end of that missionary'sego or self will. From then on,there was onlyplace for God. When the trials and agonies continuedunder the Reds,a new and inner agony fol-lowed.The external trials destroyed the ego;but their continuation produced a sense ofthe absence of God. The missionary sister then descended to asuffering of spirit faintly like unto that OurLord suffered on the Cross, when He cried:"My God,My God,Why hast Thou forsakenMe." Why would God so afflict a soul on theinside with His absence, after He already al-lowed the Communists to persecute so muchon the outside? Here we touch a greatmystery.Such a missionary is a redeemerwith a small "r"under Christ,Who is a Re-deemer with a capital "R".Since Our Lord suffered crucifixion on the outside, and had asense of being abandoned on the inside, thismissionary in continuing Christ's Redemptionin her body, suffering persecution on theoutside and a sense of alienation from Godon the inside.By a peculiar paradox,Godmade His presence felt in her soul by Hisabsence. That is the only way the creaturecan understand sin—as the felt separationfrom God.He who has not God withinhimself, cannot feel the absence of God.The soul of this missionary was thus emptiedof self by an act of self-oblation to martyr-dom,and then felt as "emptied"of God,because sharing in the redemption of theCommunists. How trivial, how insignificant seems anappeal that you make a sacrifice of $10,orfor $5,000 for such missionaries. Most of uslive on the surface of our souls!Do not givewhat you have—let that go to others whomerely want something. We who are workingfor the expansion of Christ's Church wantwhat you are!Sacrifice something that as-sociates you with the Savior on the Cross, and this missionary from China.Write toMost Reverend Fulton J.Sheen,109 East 38thStreet,New York 16,New York.
