POSTMASTER:Send form 3579 to MISSION366 Fifth Avenue New York 1,N.Y. # EDITORIAL Our Blessed Lord was not a poor man in thesame sense that we speak of the poor in Indiaor Africa or Korea or Vietnam. The Scripturestell us that Our Lord"became poor."He wasrich because He was the Creator of the world, and because He was omnipotent and becausethe heavenly hosts adored Him and because theearth was His and the fullness thereof. But Hebecame poor not only because He“emptied”Himself by taking "on our humanity"or be-cause He limited His Divine power; He was poorat His birth where He had a stranger's cave andpoor at His death where He had a stranger'sgrave. At Nazareth He was an Artisan, earningbread by the sweat of His brow standing so closeto fallen Adam.Asa Preacher He was dependentupon casual charity;as a Traveller,He jour-neyed in want.As He put it:"The foxes haveholes, the birds of the air their nests but theSon of Man hath nowhere to lay His head."In His triumphal entry,He had to_borrow theanimal upon which He rode.As a Prisoner Hewas stripped of the little bit He possessed:"they parted My garments."His death bed was a cross;the spices that embalmed Him camefrom friends. But all of this poverty was voluntary;Hegave Himself:"I lay down My life."The objectof His sacrifice was the enrichment of men noteconomically but in charity and grace andthe partaking of the Spirit.·That is why it isonly by sacrifice that we become like to Him.Since He Who was rich became poor for oursakes we must begin to impoverish ourselvesin order to share His riches.Self-sacrifice makesus like Christ. He not only said:"it is moreblessed to give than to receive"but He tastedthis blessedness, and He gave us,most of all,Himself! Share His riches by sending a sacrifice toyour Diocesan Director or to Most Rev.BishopFulton J.Sheen,366 Fifth Ave.,N.Y.1,N.Y. # GOD LOVE YOU to E.G.for $5 "I wasn't going to spend it this week nor was I going to put it in thebank—I was just going to keep it in my pocket so I think it will behappier being spent for the Missions and I'll be happier too forsending it." # GOD LOVE YOU to D.G.
