The Leading Information Technology News Summary - Now In Its 41st Year - Vol.41 No.41 - National Semiconductor Unveils 8-Bit COP8FLASH Microcontrollers

Sep 29, 2026

National Semiconductor Corporation launched the first in a series of 8-bit COP8FLASH microcontrollers designed for web-driven appliances, including the National GeodeWebPAD reference platform. The COP8SBR provides 32 kbytes of Flash program memory with user-allocatable variable-size EEPROM, while the COP8CBR integrates a 10-bit successive approximation A/D for controlling touchscreens, power management, and display settings. The family, planned for releases through 2001, totals 30+ devices and combines Flash and in-system programming to enable network-based software upgrades and diagnostics without external memory.

The Leading Information Technology News Summary--Now In Its 41st Year Vol.41 No.41 # NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTORUNVEILS 8-BIT COP8FLASHMICROCONTROLLERS National Semiconductor Corporation(NYSE:NSM)has launched the first in a series of8-bit COP8FLASH microcontrollers with amenuofspecial features optimized for the designofweb-driven appliances, including the National(R)GeodeWebPAD reference platform. The COP8SBR microcontroller features32kbytes of FLASH program memory plus user-allocatable,variable-size EEPROM on board.Asecond COP8FLASH microcontroller,theCOP8CBR,also offers an integrated 10-bitsuccessive approximation A/D,and is designed tocontrol a WebPAD touchscreen, powermanagement user interface,LCD brightness andcontrast control, and battery charging.National'sentire COP8FLASH family, scheduled for releasethrough 2001,will total more than 30microcontrollers.The COP8FLASHportfolio willoffer avariety offeature setsleveraging National'sanalog IP and leadership in package design. The COP8CBR 8-bit microcontroller isalso targeted for internet-driven applicationsrequiring remote service and control functions ofnetworked appliances such as home appliances, security systems andvending machines. The devicetakes advantage of licensed technology enablingthe FLASH memory to be used both as programmemory and data memory. This feature is October 23,2000 Page 1 # AMI DELIVERS 2MIL CONTROL LOGICASICS FOR MOBILE PENTIUMⅢ American Microsystems Inc.(AMI)hasdelivered 2 million control-logic application-specific integrated circuits(ASICs)for use withthe Intel(R)mobile Pentium(R)Ⅲ processorsfeaturing IntelSpeedSteptechnology. The companyexpects to ship a total of nearly 3 million of theASICs by the end of 2000. When used in conjunction with the mobilePentium II processor, which features the IntelSpeedStep technology, the ASIC can help extendbattery life of mobile personal computers byallowing the processor to run at alower speed andvoltage when operating on battery. With it,themobile PC can reduce its power needs by 45percent while maintaining up to 80 percent ofmaximum performance. When the mobile PCdetects a change in its power source from battery(Continued on Page 3) IN THIIS ISSUE PEROT SYSTEMS SIGNS FIVE-YEARIT AGREEMENT WITH FACTOR-E PLC....3 WINFIRST TOINVEST $1BIN BROAD-BAND,FIBER-TO-THE-HOME NETFROM LUCENT AND AVAYA …5 SST ENTERS SERIALFLASH MEMORYARENA 6 NEC INTROS NEW EXPRESS5800/120LESERVER. …7 NATIONAL(Continued from Page l) specificallytargeted atnetwork-driven applicationswith their wide range of memory requirements formicro informationappliances.Itis fully compatiblewith the company's recently announcedCOP8.COM internet connectivity solution(February 16,2000),which allows customers tocost-effectively combine reliable networkingcapabilities with remote control and monitoringfunctions in 8-bit controller applications. FAQs

What is the COP8FLASH microcontroller family designed for?

It targets web-driven appliances and internet-driven applications needing remote service and control, including home appliances and security systems.

What differentiates the COP8SBR from the COP8CBR?

The COP8SBR includes 32 kbytes of Flash program memory plus user-allocatable variable-size EEPROM, while the COP8CBR adds an integrated 10-bit successive approximation A/D and specific control-oriented functions.

How does the design support remote updates and diagnostics without external memory?

By using Flash memory combined with in-system programming via a 3-wire interface, the devices support in-field downloading of software upgrades over the network and allow recording event history for troubleshooting.
