This issue examines Lent as more than a religious season focused on sin and atonement, arguing that for a large part of society it has become spiritually meaningless without a living religious conviction. It reframes atonement as both denial and an exchange of spiritual assets, then contrasts the irreligious and still-religious perspectives on penance, sacrifice, and the Passion. The text links Lent’s relevance to social conditions and the need for reform, while urging consideration of who may have strayed from Christ’s fold.

FAQs

What is the central claim in the section about Nazism?

It asks whether the case of Nazism has been correctly presented and fairly treated, then concludes that it has been “mistreated.” It also frames Nazi accusations and defenses as requiring careful consideration of specific phases of the topic.
