Sponsa Recis presents an October 1964 issue of a spiritual review for sisters, centered on religious profession as a “second Baptism.” The article argues that, like martyrdom, religious profession purifies the soul and restores baptismal innocence by uniting the person to Christ crucified and risen. It explains how baptismal conformity shapes penance, grace, and renewed vigor of Christian life through sacramental power and lived self-denial, drawing on Thomas Aquinas and early monastic examples.

Since the days of early monasticism,it has been traditional teachingin the Church that religious profession is like a second Baptism, restoring one to full baptismal innocence. This idea developedfrom the ancient conviction that religious life is the best substitutefor martyrdom.Beyond any doubt martyrdom accomplishes a per-fect purification of the soul,so that the martyr passes immediatelyinto divine glory. In a way analogous to martyrdom, religiousprofession also purifies the soul, taking away in full the penaltydue to sins committed after Baptism, and giving a new vigor tothe life of grace. Martyrdom and religious profession purify because each in itsown way is a perfection of the conformity to the crucified andrisen Christ granted in Baptism. This conformity is a likeness toChrist resulting from a unity of life with him.Purification fromsin and its penalties, and renewed vigor of Christian life, comeonly from union with Christ in the likeness of his death and resur-rection,for his sacrifice alone can work these effects. In discussing Baptism of water and Baptism of blood,SaintThomas applies this principle, that conformity with Christ is re-quired if we are to receive the benefits of his redemption.Baptismof water unites and likens to Christ by its sacramental power, while martyrdom or Baptism of blood unites and likens to Christby actual suffering for him.'The Passion of Christ,"says Thomas,"acts in the Baptism of water through a certain figurative repre-sentation,...but acts in Baptism of blood through the imitationof Christ’s own work on the cross.”1 Thomas means to say thatin Baptism of water we are nailed to the cross with Christ sym-bolically,but this symbolism is a sacrament containing divine poweractually bringing about what is symbolized."To each baptisedperson,"he says,"the passion is imparted as if the baptized him-self had suffered and died on the cross."2 Inasmuch as by Baptism a person is united to Christ, says Thomas, and l
