Following the Japanese defeat in the Second World War,the Neth-erlands attempted to reestablish control in the Dutch East Indies.Before the Dutch were able to retake control,however,nationalist leadersSukarno and Mohammad Hatta issued a proclamation of independencefor the Republic of Indonesia on August 17,1945.For the next fouryears both the Dutch and the republican governments existed in thearchipelago,engaging in diplomatic talks as well as intermittent militaryconflicts.During the invasion of the republican capital,Yogyakarta,inDecember 1948,the Dutch military arrested high-ranking members of Michael Karabinos is a PhD candidate at Leiden University (the Netherlands)in theInstitute for History.He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maryland,Baltimore County,in 2005 and a master of science degree in library science from theCatholic University of America in 2009.Prior to beginning his PhD he was the map li-brarian at the National Geographic Society in Washington,DC,where he managed thephysical and digital map collections.
