Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial of the Effect of Intracameral Vancomycin and Gentamicin on Macular Retinal Thickness and Visual Function Following Cataract Surgery

Prospective randomized controlled trial assessed whether intracameral/infusion vancomycin (20 mg/mL) and gentamicin (8 mg/mL) at cataract surgery increase macular thickening and affect postoperative visual function. Forty-one patients (50 eyes) underwent OCT preoperatively and at 1 day, 1 week, and 5 weeks; Snellen acuity and Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity were measured at 5 weeks. Results showed no significant effect on macular thickness or visual function, while eyes with increased central retinal thickness had reduced contrast sensitivity.
