Indonesian Prospective Teachers’ Scientific Habits of Mind: A Cross-Grade Study in the Context of Local and Global Socio-scientific Issues

Study examines Indonesian prospective teachers’ views of an adapted version (including global socio-scientific issues) and a revisited version (including local socio-scientific issues) of the scientific habits of mind (SHOM) scale, and compares SHOM levels by teacher education program and grade. Data from 1,298 prospective teachers across chemistry, biology, science, elementary teacher education, and mathematics were collected using both SHOM scale versions. Results indicate locality of SSI, grade, and program influence SHOM, and familiarity with local SSI supports SHOM-based SSI decisions. Teacher education should enrich undergraduate courses integrating SSI with SHOM, measuring SSI via SHOM, and connecting ethnoscience through SSI and SHOM.
