I have no intention of presenting a paper on the subject, but thenotion of time as the measure of change strikes me as very significantwhen applied to the past three years. It has been a remarkable timewhen measured by the changes that have occurred.American Catholi-cism will never be the same again. There are two men chiefly responsible for this and,to our great sor-row,we lost both of them during the past year. They are Pope JohnXXIII and our late President John F.Kennedy. We marveled at the good press received by Pope John both in lifeand in death. It is nothing short of astounding to observe the deepinterest generated by his greatest achievement, the Second VaticanCouncil. It is my opinion, however, that future historians of Catholicism inAmerica will assess these last three years as the Kennedy Era,in orderto signal out the cause for the progress which was made by the Churchwhile this man was President. The advance is not measured by the same standards which we Catholics usually use—-more converts, thefavorable solution of the aid-to-schools problem
