This document from the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery (FCMoD) celebrates Star Wars Day, May 4th, with a focus on the iconic sounds of the franchise. It highlights Ben Burtt, the sound designer responsible for creating the universe's memorable audio landscape, from the Wookiee's roar to Darth Vader's breathing. The document invites readers to test their Star Wars sound knowledge on FCMoD’s website and encourages them to become "sound engineers" by creating their own blaster sounds at home using a metal slinky or clothes hanger, string, and basic instructions. It details a simple DIY activity to "hear laser blaster firing" and explore how altering the sound changes the effect. The document also provides the museum's contact information, including address, phone number, and website.

How can I make my own blaster sound at home?

You can make your own blaster sound by tying a string to a metal slinky or clothes hanger, wrapping it around your finger, and letting it dangle. When you 'listen' by placing your finger near your ear, it can sound like a laser blaster firing. Knocking the hanger against an object can alter the sound.
