Chapter 5: The Meaning of Connection

At 1:30 a.m. on the 18th, the police station received a report that two men, seemingly intoxicated, were fighting on the overpass. Officers immediately rushed to the scene. On the bridge, only a middle-aged man was seen sitting by the railing, holding his phone and crying loudly. The man said he hadn't been drinking, but had lost his job and was momentarily despondent. Fortunately, a strange young man intervened in time, preventing a serious accident. After being comforted and shown concern by others, the man calmed down and assured the police that he would not have any more suicidal thoughts.

Zhang Yixian looked up at the morning news playing on the breakfast shop's TV while picking up a medium-sized cup of warm milk tea from the table. Although a live broadcast wasn't possible, the news station still dispatched cameramen to the overpass where the incident occurred to film. A petite female reporter stood in front of the camera, reading her script aloud, while cars streamed past nonstop in the lanes behind her. He silently thought to himself: Why didn't you take a picture of the fingerprints on the railing? That would have been truly horrifying. After taking the last sip of his milk tea, Zhang Yixian picked up his backpack from beside him, hugged it to his lap, and turned his gaze back to the girl sitting across the table.

His female classmate Lin Yating caught him staring and quickly forked up egg pancake to stuff into her mouth. Seeing her puffing out her cheeks and chewing like a hamster, Zhang Yixian said to her, "No need to rush, you don't have class in the morning anyway, take your time eating." She nodded and slowed down her chewing, yet her face still looked a little embarrassed. Lin Yating was an introverted girl with delicate, fair skin and a soft, high-pitched voice. They had been classmates for two years and grown quite close, but she always struck Zhang Yixian as a skittish little creature. For some reason, Zhang Yixian often ran into her at breakfast shops and casual diners, and they spent much of their break time together. He sometimes wondered if his own habitual carelessness was messing up his daily schedule, yet oddly enough, their slow, laid-back rhythms fit perfectly together.

Seeing there were still several egg pancakes left on her plate, Zhang Yixian shifted his attention back to the television. There hadn't been much newsworthy material lately, so this report ran longer than usual. The core story wrapped up neatly: a mysterious young man had rescued a suicidal office worker, and the segment ended with an interview with the duty police officer from that night. The police formally closed the case. A seasoned four-star senior officer stood before the camera, awkwardly offering thanks while also promoting official outreach policies, with a younger subordinate standing quietly behind him as backdrop. "Thank you to the alert citizens who called this incident in, stopping a family from being torn apart. We ask everyone to pay more attention to the people around you," the veteran officer said.

"Yating," Zhang Yixian waved to get her attention and gestured toward the screen, "That policeman standing in the back is really handsome." She glanced up and replied softly, "He’s alright, I guess." "Really? I think he’s quite good-looking." "Hmm, he’s not my type," she answered, turning her eyes straight to Zhang Yixian’s face. Her round, clear eyes held none of her usual timidity, resembling a small animal staring openly at him. A bad premonition washed over Zhang Yixian. He glanced at the back of Lin Yating’s head and spotted the red line stretching from her shoulder blades toward him—it glowed far brighter and more distinct than it had in the past few months.
