Extra Chapter

At four in the afternoon on a weekday, when most people were still sitting in office buildings, this small temple was quite tranquil. As the middle-aged lady in charge of upkeep walked in to change the flowers in the vase, there was only one young man in a student uniform standing inside.

This young man seemed to have Western heritage. His skin was very fair, with large, double-lidded eyes, a high nose bridge, full lips, and long, wavy brown hair reaching his neck. Even the auntie, who had seen many good-looking people, couldn't help but look at him a little longer.

He stuck an incense stick into the bowl, his gaze fixed on the deity statue, lost in thought. For some reason, the rims of his eyes grew increasingly red. After a while, clear liquid began to flow from the corners of his eyes.

The young man's tears fell lightly, like morning dew. The tip of his upturned nose started turning pink. The auntie who was watching couldn't bear it any longer and quickly pulled out a packet of tissues to hand to him.

"Thank you, khrab." His voice sounded nasal and slightly hoarse. The young man used the tissue to wipe his cheeks, trying hard to hold back further tears.

The auntie observed his shiny black pupils and long, wet eyelashes. Her maternal instincts were triggered to the extreme, so her tone when she spoke was as gentle as when she talked to the little stray animals around the temple.

"Is something wrong, child?”

The worries of a school-aged child probably can't escape academic problems. Perhaps this young man had just failed an exam or been scolded by a teacher. Thinking this, the auntie felt even more sympathy. Kids these days really have to bear so much pressure. The other day, friends in the LINE group shared news about kindergarteners taking extra classes to test into first grade. Even three- and four-year-olds have to grab pencils and fight their way in. It's unimaginable how intense the competition at the university level must be.

At this point in her thoughts, the young man sniffled loudly before answering in a muffled voice, "I just got dumped by my faen, khrab."

"..." Oh, so it's a broken heart.

Teenage love problems are also a big deal. An old friend who owns a dorm once said that a female student overdosed on sleeping pills after a fight with her boyfriend. Thankfully, she was taken to the hospital in time, otherwise, it would have been hard to find someone to rent the room again.

"I met my faen after praying here," the young man raised his hand to rub his eyes, explaining with a dejected demeanor. "He broke up with me this morning and won't answer my calls anymore. I didn't know what to do... so I thought I'd come and ask the deity for help one more time..."

The auntie handed him another tissue, her gentle tone mixed with a concern for other people's business. "Why did you break up?"

The young man's shoulders slumped. "He said I'm a very good person, that I didn't do anything wrong, that it's his fault. He wants to be alone, needs time to find himself... But he also said, that when he's ready to be with someone for real, he'll come back to me. That means he still likes me, right?"

As he said this, a spark of hope suddenly flashed in his eyes.

The auntie looked at his face with a pitying gaze. Such a classic breakup line sounds like the other party couldn't even be bothered to come up with a proper excuse. Only someone truly naive would believe it.

The auntie's gaze must have been too revealing, as the young man's expression wilted again. "My friends said he's just saying that. You probably think the same, don't you, khrab?"

"Don't be sad, child," the auntie comforted him, patting his back and shoulder. "There's a long future ahead. With such a handsome face, are you still afraid you won't find another faen?"

"I am afraid, khrab," the young man heaved a big sigh. "I'll tell you a secret. Actually, when I was young, a fortune teller said the karmic creditor haunting me in this life was my destined partner from a previous life. He's very jealous. No matter who I date, he'll make us break up. So in this life, I'm destined to have no partner. Whoever I love, I'll never have my wish fulfilled."

As he talked, tears threatened to fall again. He blinked rapidly, the smile at the corner of his mouth making him look like a weak person forcing strength. "I tried praying for a faen here because I thought if it was someone sent by the deity, that karmic creditor probably couldn't do anything. But in the end, it didn't work... I guess I'll have to be single forever."

Such a lovely child destined to live in loneliness. The auntie looked at his red eyes and felt so moved she almost cried along with him.

She hesitated for a moment before deciding to pull out something resembling a small cloth pouch and stuff it into his hand.

"This is a love charm. Originally, I asked for it for my daughter, but it seems you might need it more."

The young man looked at the sweet, pink charm in his hand, his expression confused. "...Thank you, khrab."

The auntie patted the back of his hand lightly. "Keep it with you, child. And remember to make merit and do good deeds. The deities won't abandon a good person."

Her daughter had been married for years now. Apart from occasional arguments, her married life was considered smooth. Compared to that, this young man's situation seemed much more severe.

Helping someone in distress also counts as accumulating merit for oneself. The auntie smiled, feeling unburdened, and felt her steps were lighter as she walked outside.

"Achoo!"

Darin raised a tissue to cover his nose before stepping back, distancing himself from the incense bowl filled with smoke.

Normally, he was in good health, having only suffered from childhood allergies. The symptoms weren't too severe, but in enclosed, incense-filled places like this temple, it was unavoidable for them to flare up. Besides irritating his eyes, his nose also stung.

The cell phone in his trouser pocket vibrated with a shrill ringtone, signaling an incoming call. Darin carefully tucked the unexpected charm inside his shirt and fished out his phone to answer.

"What's up, Ohm?"

[Where are you right now?] The voice of his close friend on the other end sounded tense, different from usual.

"I'm at the temple..."

Before he could finish his sentence, the high-pitched voice of a girl cut in.

[Oy, Ai Rin, something this big has happened and you still have the mood to go to the temple and listen to Dharma? Get over to us right now, ka!]

Darin moved the phone slightly away from his ear before asking, "Did something happen to someone, Ginny?"

This friend of his had a fiery temper and a sharp tongue, but she was also loyal to her friends. If she said there was a big deal, it definitely meant something had happened to one of their group.

It had only been a few days since the semester started, and he had been dumped by P'Krit out of the blue. Now another problem had arisen with a friend in the group. It seemed like they'd have to gather and go make some merit to cleanse the bad luck.

Ginny replied with a fierce tone, [Nothing happened to anyone. It's just that this bastard P'Krit might be in for a world of hurt very soon.]

Darin was taken aback. "Why? What about P'Krit?”

His question was met with the sound of the two people on the other end whispering to each other. Darin tried to listen closely but couldn't make out what they were saying. After waiting for almost a minute, the phone was back in Ohm's hands.

[Have you checked IG at all?]

Suddenly, his friend changed the subject abruptly. Darin, who still couldn't grasp the situation, could only answer truthfully, "No."

He never felt that sitting and selecting photos to post for others to see was an entertaining activity. So, if not for being tagged by friends occasionally, Darin would have forgotten he even had this app on his phone.

[Go check P'Krit's IG right now.]

Ohm's tone was so serious that Darin could only comply. He opened Instagram and typed in P'Krit's name, but something went wrong with the system somewhere. While the number of posts at the top still showed over a thousand, the area below said there were no posts at all.

When he mentioned this, Ohm got angry. [Did he block you!?]

[Wait, I'll screenshot and send it. You check LINE quickly.] Ginny's voice came from the side, sounding just as furious.

Darin's mind was filled with question marks. He switched to the LINE app and tapped to view the image Ginny had just sent. But once he saw the picture clearly, his gaze trembled violently.

What Ginny sent was an image posted on Instagram. In the picture, two men stood side by side. The one on the left had a comb-over hairstyle, his hand bent into a half-heart shape. Darin had never seen this person's face before. But the man next to him, perfectly matching his hand pose with the other in that popular Korean couple pose, was, no matter how many times he looked, the ex who had broken up with him less than ten hours ago.

The caption below read: 'happy 1 month anniversary ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,’ with a long string of red heart emojis. The sweetness practically oozed from the screen.
