Not the soft, life-giving patter that misted the redwoods he now called home, but a hard, angry drumming on asphalt. It was a sound that washed nothing clean. It slicked the world in a treacherous glaze, turning the city into a distorted reﬂection of itself, a smear of neon reds and blues bleeding across the pavement. He was running. His lungs burned with a familiar ﬁre, a sensation that bled into his waking life, but in the dream, it was different. It was the burn of adrenaline, not exhaustion. His feet slapped against the wet ground, the rhythmic percussion a frantic counterpoint to the rain’s drumming.
