Research examines which antecedents of supply chain financing must be addressed to ensure agricultural supply chains from preplanting to postharvesting generate sufficient food for sustainable food security in resource-constrained developing economies. Using complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory, the study models how prospective and challenging financing schemes interact with social and repayment systems. Results show challenging schemes need to navigate these systems, while prospective schemes work better when they do as well. Recommendations emphasize accessible, community-appropriate finance, mitigation of default risk, reduction of cumbersome arrangements, and proximity to farming communities to tailor stage-specific funding.
