Using a behavioral-based analysis framework, the study examines emotion regulation behaviors in children and adolescents with non-specific intellectual developmental disabilities (NS-IDDs) when guided to regulate emotions in a concrete, emotion-evoking game scenario. Observations cover forty NS-IDD participants and forty typically developing children matched on verbal developmental age during The Great Ant Race, designed to elicit both negative and positive emotions. Caregivers completed the Emotion Regulation Checklist-vf, capturing daily-life emotion regulation. Findings show group differences in both questionnaire and behavioral measures, along with links between data sources. Cluster analyses identify three distinct behavioral profiles, varying in NS-IDD/TD proportions, chronological age, verbal development level, and caregiver-rated regulation skills. Results emphasize heterogeneity and support targeted interventions.
