They nailed two thieves to crosses, one on his right, and one on his left. In the afternoon, Jesus died. That evening, a good and righteous man named Joseph went to Pilate and asked Pilate to permit him to take Jesus’ body to bury it. Joseph was a member of the Jewish Council, but he had not agreed to kill Jesus. With Pilate’s permission, Joseph took the dead body of Jesus down from the cross. He wrapped it in a linen cloth and put Jesus’ body in a burial chamber or tomb that was cut out of rock and had never been used. The chief priests and some of the Pharisees went to Pilate.“Sir,” they told him,“Weremember that when this deceiver was still alive, he said he would come alive again after three days.” They continued,“So we ask you to order soldiers to guard the tomb so his disciples can’t come and steal the body and then declare that he is alive!” Pilate said,“Take guards to make sure they do not steal his body.” So they sealed the burial place and stationed guards.
