What should a personal statement accomplish for admissions readers?

A personal statement should tell a story and clearly communicate motivations, experiences, values, traits, skills, and fit for the program. It also serves as a strong starting point for conversation in a potential interview.

How does the “Velcro” personal statement approach help you stand out?

It prompts you to create a personal connection that helps readers remember you, including what is special or unique about you and the experiences that set you apart. It also guides you to share stories that help an interviewer know and understand you better.

What are the key requirements and restrictions for the WCMC-Q personal statement?

Requirements include uniting the essay with a theme or thesis, using concrete life examples, starting with an attention-grabbing lead, adhering to the word limit, and using formal writing with correct grammar. Restrictions include not writing an autobiography/resume in prose, not adding information that doesn’t support the thesis, avoiding generic statements, and skipping controversy such as political or religious beliefs.
