This document outlines a poetry project called the "Where I'm From Poem Project," designed to help students explore their identity and heritage through creative writing. The project encourages students to use a provided storyboard template for two primary purposes: first, to plan corresponding images that will visually accompany their poem, utilizing Google Image Search for original drawings, photographs, or other visual aids; and second, to revise their writing by engaging the reader through rich, descriptive language that appeals to the senses. The project aims to elevate student writing by fostering thick description, thereby enhancing the reader's immersion and emotional connection to the poem's themes. The document also offers helpful resources for digital storytelling, including a YouTube channel curated with young people's digital stories and articles from the Center for Digital Storytelling that delve into the practice and process of digital storytelling. Additionally, an external resource from The University of Houston, titled "The Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling," is provided. Depending on the age group of the students, educators can extend the project by having them write a reflection on their experience of crafting their poem, creating or gathering visuals to complement their words, and critically analyzing the origins and influences that shape their work. A link to evaluation criteria for a related project is also included, indicating a framework for assessing student outcomes and project success.
