THE BRONTES AND THEIR STARS - Foreword

Oct 12, 2026

A foreword explains why much has already been written about the Brontë family—especially the authors behind "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights"—yet argues that one perspective has been largely overlooked: astrology. It presents astrology as a method to look behind events to their causes, answering where the Brontës were born under the Zodiac and what planetary configurations relate to genius, successes, failures, and early deaths. The author outlines a broad, accurate approach and acknowledges sources and permissions for quotations.

# THE BRONTES AND THEIR STARS THE BRONTES ANDTHEIR STARS ByMAUD MARGESSON AVTHOR or“ASTROLOGY N EPIGRAM” ILLUSTRATED WITH ASTROLOGICAL CHARTS LONDON:RIDER &CO.PATERNOSTER HOUSE,E.C. # FOREWORD MucH,probably too much, has already been writtenconcerning the Brontěs—about the two who becamefamous, and the two whose chief claim to remembranceis their intimate connection with the authors of faneEyre and Wuthering Heights. There is no incident ofinterest regarding this family,no report of theirsayings or doings that has not been published,com-mented on,disputed and criticized, until, truly, thereseems nothing left to be said. What fresh light couldpossibly be brought to bear on the lives of these peoplewho are still to this day subjects of discussion, thoughit is more than a hundred years since they were born? But one point of view has so far escaped the atten-tion of the biographer, namely that of the astrologer. To the astrologer a door is open that is closed toother enquirers. He can take a glimpse behind thescenes and note the active power at work.He seesnot only effects but causes. To him there is a wholeworld of interest in the answers to the questions:Under what signs of the Zodiac were the Brontesborn? What conformation of the planets is respon-sible for their genius? How were their successes, their failures, and their premature deaths foreshadowedin the heavens? It is because this side of the subject has not yetbeen touched upon that I have had the courage toattempt to add to the already huge pile of Bronteliterature, and have endeavoured to unravel the horo-scopes of this remarkable family. But in doing so Ihave purposely taken as broad a view of their nativitiesas possible, consistent with giving an accurate account FOREWORD of the influence of their stars.Minor points havebeen omitted where they did not seem important.Tohave given a detailed and comprehensive reading ofthe nativities would have made the book too long, and would have deprived it of interest to all exceptthe expert astrologer. My thanks are due to the late Mr.Clement Shorterfor giving me his full permission to quote anything Iwish from his books on the Bronte's,and also fromtheir poems. All quotations, unless otherwise stated, are taken from his The Brontěs,Life and Letters.Mr.John Drinkwater also kindly allows me to quote fromthe essay on Branwell Bronte in his Book for Bookmen. Mr.V.E.Robson,co-editor of Modern Astrology, undertook the task of calculating the horoscopes fromthe large amount of data available. That the workhas been ably done,I am sure all astrologers willacknowledge.
