NCH ToK Day session focuses on improving Theory of Knowledge (ToK) essay performance by diagnosing recurring student weaknesses and modelling an effective essay structure. It outlines a backward approach to composing: choosing the prescribed title, defining key terms, extracting knowledge questions, building arguments supported by examples, assessing those arguments, and stating conclusions. The material distinguishes classroom teaching issues from development issues, then explains generic problem types such as failure to unpack titles, weak example analysis, limited evaluation, and unanswered prescribed questions.

Some generic types of problem 1. There is a failure to unpack the prescribed title, use of dictionary definitions not connected to the rest of the essay. Knowledge questions stated up front bear little relation to the PT. 2. There are no examples or examples are described but not analysed. Examples are not connected to the PT. 3. Examples are expected to stand on their own – but there is no attempt to show why the examples are important, significant or typical – there is no generalisation from analysis of examples. 4. The is little or no evaluation in the essay. Different lines of argument are not assessed. 5. The essay does not answer the question in the prescribed title. Familiar problems?

FAQs

What is the recommended process for developing a strong ToK essay?

The process starts with choosing the prescribed title and defining key terms, then extracting knowledge questions. It continues by producing arguments supported by examples, assessing those arguments, and ending with clear conclusions.

How do the session’s problems relate to teaching in the classroom?

The session notes that some issues can relate to how ToK content is taught (for instance, those linked to Ways of Knowing). However, most problems are described as stemming from how the ToK essay is developed.

What are common generic weaknesses in ToK essays?

Common weaknesses include failing to unpack the prescribed title, using dictionary-style definitions that do not connect to the essay, providing examples without analysis or connection to the title, and lacking evaluation of different lines of argument.
