Tally Graphs - 5th Grade Week 13 Memo

Oct 12, 2026

Instructions guide students to collect tally marks from given images, convert tally totals into graphs, and interpret multiple graph types. Activities cover tally tables for fruits, pie charts based on stationery sales, bar graphs about zoo animal favourites with fraction and percentage reasoning, and pictographs created from tally marks for balls. Includes sample questions and worked results to reinforce converting between totals, percentages, fractions, and differences.

Memorandum 1 (fruit tally table)

Tally Graphs 1. Each time you see an image, make a tally mark. Then use your tally mark and make a graph. Tally graph | Fruit | Tally mark | Total | | --- | --- | --- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pie charts 2. The pie chart represent the total percentages of sales of stationery. Use the pie chart to answer the questions below. 2.1 What percentage of drawing sheets were sold? 2.2 Which stationery had the highest sales? What was the percentage? 2.3 Express the percentage of pens sold as a common fraction and simplify. 2.4 What is the difference between the compass boxes and books that were sold? Express your answer as a common fraction and simplify. Bar graphs 3. Use the bar graph to answer the question below. | Favourite animals at the Zoo

How many children liked this animal? 3.3 What do you think the other animal is? 3.4 How many more children liked lions than elephants? 3.5 If there were 35 children, what percentage of the children like giraffes? Pictographs 4. Use the tally marks below and design your own pictograph. | Balls | Tally marks | | --- | --- | | Soccer balls | ~~llll~~ ~~ llll~~ ll | | Rugby balls | ~~llll~~ lll | | Tennis balls | ~~llll~~ ~~llll~~ ~~ llll~~ ~~llll~~ l | | Golf balls | ~~llll~~ ~~llll~~ ~~ llll~~ llll | | Cricket balls | ~~llll~~ llll | MEMORANDUM 1. | Fruit | Tally mark | Total | | --- | --- | --- | | Apples | ~~llll~~ lll | 8 | | Bananas | ~~llll~~ l | 6 | | Watermelons | ~~llll~~ ll | 7 | | Pineapples | ~~llll~~ ~~llll~~ | 10 | | Oranges | ~~llll ~~ llll | 9 | 2.1 5% 2.2 pencils 37% 2.3 28100 = 725 2.4 19% -11% = 8% 8 2 = = 100 25 3.1 5 children – Why? FAQs

How do you make a tally graph from images?

Whenever you see an image, add one tally mark. Then use the tally marks to fill in the totals and create the graph for the categories shown.

How do you answer questions using a pie chart in this worksheet?

Use the pie chart to read the total percentages for each stationery type. Then compute required values such as the percentage sold, the highest-selling item, and express percentages as fractions if asked.

What is the difference between a bar graph and a pictograph in these activities?

A bar graph uses bars to compare counts across categories, and you answer questions from those comparisons. A pictograph uses symbols (like balls) based on tally marks, requiring you to design your own pictograph from the given tally data.
