The SQL*LIMS Template Management Suite streamlines how laboratory information systems create, load, and maintain templates. It combines a Template Automation Tool for rapid batch loading and a Template Maintenance Tool for centralized, approval-based updates across multiple template entries. By using spreadsheet-style definition, controlled XML-based sharing, dependency-aware uploads, and validation logs, the suite improves build speed, data integrity, and operational efficiency, while supporting legacy import for comma-delimited template data.

Templates are critical components of all SQL*LIMS systems. They define how the LIMS operates and how laboratory work is processed. Templates have historically been created and updated using the SQL*LIMS user interface. However, this process becomes very time consuming if a large volume of templates need to be created or modified. The SQL*LIMS Template Management Suite, comprised of the Template Automation Tool and Template Maintenance Tool, was built specifically to address the need to manage large volumes of template data. A Powerful Combination The Template Management Suite provides you with powerful tools for the loading and maintenance of SQL*LIMS Templates. Rapid initial definition of Templates into one or more SQL*LIMS instances is now possible with the Template Automation Tool. Once loaded, Template changes may easily be made across multiple template entries all at one time with the Template Maintenance Tool. Leverage the Template Management Suite to increase your productivity and lower your ongoing costs of managing your SQL*LIMS template! Template Automation Tool Overview During an implementation or upgrade, LABVANTAGE customers have historically used a variety of documentation to compile their Template Specification information prior to manually creating all templates in SQL*LIMS. This documentation has taken various forms such as Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or other non-electronic media. The Template Automation Tool consolidates the best practices from these techniques into a tool that is widely used as to save time and cost by batch loading templates. The Template Automation Tool has saved customers millions of dollars and greatly reduced ongoing operating costs. “At Pfizer, we originally estimated that we would spend $680,000 per site on template building activities. This represented 70% of the total cost of our LIMS deployment”, stated Paul Holman, Director of Quality Systems, at the 2010 LABVANTAGE Customer Training and Education Conference (CTEC) . “By leveraging the Template Automation Tool, we were able to reduce those costs to $360,000 per site, resulting in a savings of $320,000 per site or more than $8 million dollars over the duration of the deployment.” Benefits Increases Productivity. The Template Automation Tool provides a familiar spreadsheet format where SQL*LIMS template objects (Lot and Sample Plans, Specifications, Test Methods, Stability Protocols, etc.) can be easily specified for a particular LIMS instance. By using a spreadsheet styled input to define template objects, better control of object creation can be maintained resulting in a more accurate and faster build of these objects. Data is loaded into a highly specialized spreadsheet format where the user can review and transform this data to accommodate planned changes or better translation to SQL*LIMS. After any necessary transformations and review, the data is then quickly uploaded into the SQL*LIMS environment. Maintains Data Integrity. The Template Automation Tool structure and content is strictly controlled and fully validated by LABVANTAGE. This includes data entry validation features such as dynamic creation of lower objects (i.e. tests), which are utilized to build higher template objects (i.e. specifications) . This formatting facilitates the proper insertion of the data from the spreadsheet into the database, which expects the data to be in specific locations within pre-defined worksheets. As Templates are defined in the tool, they can be saved in an XML file and shared with others for additional work and review. During the upload of the template data into SQL*LIMS, the tool adheres to all template and
