Social Media Tips & Tools for ASSP Member Communities Social media can help your community and its members meet new people, learn new things, establish new professional connections and attract new ASSP members. Tips & Best Practices ▪ Leverage the ASSP Volunteer Social Media Policy to encourage ethical and accurate use of social media tools for all community members. ▪ Survey members to learn the kinds of things they want to start conversations about and which social media platform they use most. Focus your efforts on building connections with relevant content through the social media platform your community is using. ▪ Be consistent in posting and responding to posts so members know the group/page is an active space to connect. Look for member engagement through likes, shares, comments and posts on a regular basis. ▪ Remember your audience is looking for valuable information and connections to help them solve their workplace challenges. Include a mix of content in your posts, like updates about the community and opportunities to get involved, member highlights, relevant OSH news and resources from ASSP. ▪ Leverage a content calendar to plan your posts and keep your team organized. Include the messaging, who is responsible for making the post and other relevant information like links or hashtags. Aim for at least 1-2 leader-initiated posts per week. ▪ Participate in relevant conversations by responding to or sharing posts from others from the community’s account. You can get started by connecting with ASSP on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Hashtags can help connect your post to larger conversations across platforms; use them sparingly to be most effective. ▪ While your community’s social media chair takes the lead, all community leaders should commit to maintain and monitor the group or page. Engage multiple leaders in contributing relevant content. Encourage leaders to like, share, comment and post from their personal accounts to demonstrate that this is an active community that welcomes multiple perspectives. ▪ Incorporate feedback you hear from members through social media into your community’s operations. If you see people interacting with certain kinds of posts, provide more information like that. If a particular post sparks a great conversation, consider the topic for future programming. If members share direct feedback about the community, work with your leadership team to respond and change as needed. ▪ Have a goal in mind , like: o Post xx time per week o Over the next six months we want to xx individuals to engage with our content through likes, shares, comments and posts o Grow followers by xx over the next year o Use social media as a micro-volunteer opportunity to bring in new leaders ▪ If your community doesn’t have a leader or other volunteer that can support engagement in your social media spaces right now but expects to in the future , let visitors know with a brief post like: We are currently looking for a volunteer to lead engagement on our social media pages, and expect to have that position filled soon. Stay tuned to this page for community news and updates. ▪ If your community isn’t able to maintain engagement on a social media site or members have let you know that’s not where they like to engage, it’s okay to close the group/page. Let visitors know with a brief post like: After thoughtful consideration, we have decided to close this group/page and invest our efforts into other areas where our members are more engaged. We appreciate your support as we continue to improve engagement efforts for our community. Tools ▪ Society Operating Guideline 2.4: ASSP Volunteer Social Media Policy ▪ Standard ASSP Terms of Use for community social media accounts: The purpose of this group is to connect and discuss news, trends and share valuable knowledge in safety professional field.
