A boat bill of sale serves as proof of purchase, showing a buyer's rightful ownership. This document is typically signed by both parties and may be notarized for added validity. The bill of sale is often required during the registration process at the DMV, signifying that the new owner acquired the boat legally. It can be thought of as a "receipt" for the sale of a watercraft. Selling a boat involves several steps, starting with listing it for sale through various channels such as online listings or advertising in newspapers and media. The most recommended method is online listing due to its wide reach and relatively low cost. Recommended websites include. Once the ad goes live, potential buyers will start contacting the seller, often requesting to view the boat in person. The level of effort the seller invests in showings can vary based on their preference and the value of the boat. For high-end boats, taking the buyer for a test drive is common, demonstrating the boat's condition and the seller's confidence in the sale. When a buyer expresses interest in purchasing, negotiations begin. It's advisable for sellers to decide beforehand their lowest acceptable price, serving as a guideline during negotiations and preventing overcommitment. This step concludes with completing the bill of sale form, typically filled out by the seller due to their familiarity with the boat being sold. The form requires information such as names, date of the sale, total amount paid for the boat, trailer, or motor (if applicable), signatures of both parties, and optional notarization. A downloadable template is available in various formats like PDF, Word, and OpenDocument for creating a bill of sale. The process involves several key steps: 1 . **Buyer and Seller Information:** At the top of the first page, write the names of the buyer(s) and seller(s), along with the date of the sale. 2. **What was Sold:** Depending on what was sold, select appropriate checkboxes for "Boat," "Trailer," or "Motor." For each selected option, fill out specific details such as make, model, year, length (for boats), or axles and VIN (for trailers), along with engine specifications like make, model, year, horsepower, serial number, and hours (for motors) . 3. **Prices:** Enter the price for each item being sold. 4. **Signatures and Notarization:** Complete the form by signing it as both buyer(s) and seller(s), ideally notarizing it as well. After completing these steps and ensuring all required information is filled out, provide an original copy of the bill of sale to the buyer once payment is made, reserving a copy for additional parties if necessary. The boat bill of sale must include accurate information about the vessel, including the HIN, number of hours on the engines, style, year built, and any other relevant details. The buyer and seller will need to provide their names, mailing addresses, and payment details, such as the purchase price and any liens or encumbrances. A notary public's signature is optional but recommended, especially if witnesses are present. The seller must provide registration documents for the boat if it is being sold in the same state, while the buyer will need to follow the new registration guidelines in their respective state. The parties should be aware that signing the form constitutes a legal contract, and both must perform their obligations. Witnesses can be included if desired, with each witness required to sign and date their name, as well as print it legibly. A notary public's presence adds weight to the signatures and can provide additional proof of validity.
