ROCKETS AND FUZES - I5 MAY 1945

Oct 12, 2026

Indexing material for a confidential United States arms section covering rockets, fuzes, and related components, organized into charted and enumerated entries by rocket and fuze type. The text distinguishes rockets from bombs and projectiles by propulsion principles, describing how rocket motors carry propellant charges and how ignition generates hot gases. It explains the thrust-producing gas expansion inside the motor tube, the role of the nozzle and nozzle attachment, and the interaction of pressure forces to produce forward motion.

FAQs

Why can rockets not be classified exactly like bombs or projectiles?

Rockets use a distinctive propulsive feature: a carried charge generates thrust by producing hot gases inside the rocket motor, rather than relying on dropped or fired projectiles.

What is the rocket motor and what does it contain?

The rocket motor is the propulsion unit containing the propellant charge, and it is typically attached to the body or heads that include the payload and initiation device.

How is thrust produced inside the rocket motor?

As the propellant burns, hot gases are generated and exert pressure against the confines of the motor tube. With the forward end closed and the aft end partially open, the resulting net force acts as thrust to propel the rocket forward.
