0:01 Welcome to the valley college connection where John Kawai and scott Weiganad, two valley professors engage in a 0:07 conversation about success with educators and students. Each week they'll sit down with a different guest to find 0:13 out ways each of us have had to plan persevere and overcome to where we are now. The show will also highlight 0:19 resources and services that are working to make a difference at Valley college. We are joined this afternoon by Raul 0:25. Castillo executive director of the foundation at Los Angeles Valley College. Thank you so much for joining us Raul. 0:32 Oh thank you for having me Scott, thank you John. We've been wanting to talk with you for 0:37 quite some time now so we're really excited to have this opportunity and to be able to hear about your journey to 0:43 Valley College and then to really dig in and get a much richer understanding of the foundation and all the different 0:49 ways that it it contributes to the college and the community. So with that in our typical fashion we like to throw 0:56 out the invitation to our guests to take your story as far back as you'd like to go in terms of how you ultimately got 1:03 here to Valley college, and so if if that journey begins you know in kindergarten and you take us all the way through it. 1:09 That's awesome if you want to jump ahead a little bit that's okay too but it is oftentimes helpful just to hear sort of 1:14 the steps along the way and sort of framing how you got here. Yeah well you know i've listened to a few of the 1:20 podcasts the two of you have done and so i mean I’ll take you way back when uh 1:26 first off I am an alumnus of Los Angeles Valley College it has to start with just 1:32 like a lot of our typical students i mean many families immigrated here 1:37 and my family was among them you know my family immigrated to the united states on listen to this july 4th 1:44 1974 and i remember that first night my dad would came ahead of us and 1:50 got an apartment near echo park and later that night i hear these loud 1:56 explosions and popping and i'm thinking that there was a war going on outside but it was just a fourth of july 2:01 celebration so so that's how it started for us we moved to the san fernando valley in 1977 2:09 i attended a nearby catholic school in high school called st genevieve high school in panorama city when i graduated 2:16 from there i was kind of hoping to enroll in a nearby catholic university 2:23 but my grades just weren't up to par so the other thing too it would have been really really expensive to go to that 2:30 school and so you know i decided that the best and most economical way to go about higher 2:36 education is to attend community college and los angeles valley colleges wasn't 2:41 far from where i grew up in in arlida let me stop you or interrupt you for just a second just to wind it back a 2:47 little bit just for some more details there about that that sort of experience so where did your parents immigrate from 2:53 uh the philippines okay and so when when your family came here did you have other family who was 2:58 already living in the area did you come with siblings what was that experience like that you recall yeah uh so my dad 3:05 came first you know he came here to find a job we were actually supposed to 3:10 live in orlando florida but because my dad had family in san francisco and la 3:16 they convinced him you know you can start a living here there's a lot of opportunities so 3:21 you know he got a job with pacific bell which was part of the 3:27 american telephone and telegraph company att and he got a part-time clerical job at 3:32 the los angeles time because he could type 75 words a minute so that the man worked really hard he 3:39 would get up he would leave the house at six o'clock and come home at nine o'clock at night my mom also worked and 3:46 i have two younger siblings one other sibling also attended los angeles valley college she went on transferred to cal 3
