Implementation: Timing & Other Considerations If the CBE were to decide to transition some or all modified-calendar schools to the traditional calendar, what factors should be considered in an implementation plan? Is September 2023 a reasonable timeframe for implementation? ▪ impact on the community i.e childcare arrangements, supports for families... it's a big shift for many families who are accustomed to modified schedule ▪ -impact on the community ▪ September 2023 is a great start time. ▪ Agreed Sep 2023 is the right time to start this change ▪ It should be fine since I was looking for a longer break during summer especially when we want to go out of the country during no school days. ▪ For us it doesn't really matter which calendar would be implemented as it's only the breaks that's the difference ▪ why would it make a difference to school repair? are the schools on a traditional schedule better maintained than those on a modified schedule? ▪ Having a longer break at spring, fall and winter is nice as a family of immigrants who have family travel from and to overseas. ▪ I think giving notice by the end of the calendar year is appropriate for the next school year ▪ I think September 2023 is a reasonable time frame. ▪ Implementation for 2023 would be best ▪ I think that giving notice by early 2023 would be preferred so families can plan accordingly. My employment requires our vacation requests to be submitted very early in the year which I base on my children’s school calendar ▪ I have children in both Modified and Traditional, have 1 in grade 9 1 in grade 7 have not had much of issue and actually really like the 1 on 1 time I get on extra breaks with my son ▪ Will Busing fees change is we switch from Modified to Traditional ▪ this year will be important for implementation and changes for September 2023 are reasonable ▪ one daughter in grade 1-modified school -and this seems to work ▪ through transparency-please share your cost savings and be transparent who how these supports are being used to support student ▪ one in modified and one in traditional -worked really well for my family ▪ don't even see the issue with bus routes-have worked really well to spend quality time with one child at a time ▪ one modified and one traditional -single mom-hard to balance-covid all traditional -was nice. 1 ▪ summer is only 6 weeks-visiting family-felt that crunch and then student had to return to modified ▪ implementation strategy is important as it will impact lives ▪ this year will be important -prefer the modified model -having children in two systems is challenging ▪ day care that my daughter went to and week in October my daughter was all by myself-thankful that they did take my daughter in Benefits & Drawbacks of the Two Calendars and Scheduling Challenges with Having Both What are the benefits and drawbacks of the modified calendar? What are the benefits and drawbacks of the traditional calendar? Do you face scheduling challenges related to the operation of two school calendars? ▪ At this time we do not face a scheduling issue, but in the future we will. The breaks in the year seem to be a pro for our family, and would be missed if a shift to the traditional calendar happened. ▪ having all the schools on one schedule will be a major difference for our family. having separate calendars for multiple children opposes major scheduling difficulties as a single parent ▪ We like the modified timetable shorter summer break along with fall and spring breaks are awes

FAQs

What factors should be considered if CBE moves some modified-calendar schools to the traditional calendar?

Community comments highlight childcare and family scheduling impacts, support arrangements for families, transparency about cost savings and how supports are used, and operational implications such as maintenance and busing changes.

Is September 2023 considered a reasonable timeframe for implementation?

Multiple respondents support Sept. 2023 as a good or preferred start time, while others suggest giving notice by early 2023 so families can plan vacation requests and other commitments.

What benefits and drawbacks are mentioned for the modified versus traditional calendars?

Comments describe the modified calendar as offering more frequent breaks and improved mental well-being, with a shorter summer break and additional breaks in fall and spring, while some note drawbacks such as limited access to late-August programming; the traditional calendar is viewed as easier for the school system but may require families to adjust longer breaks and schedules.
