Step-by-step instructions for creating snowflakes in multiple formats: paper snowflakes from a round coffee filter using a sequence of folds, pinching, and cutting; crystal snowflakes using borax dissolved in hot water, then shaping a six-pointed star with chenille stem and wrapping string to form a loop before hanging to grow crystals. Includes a virtual snowflake section with interactive websites that generate 2D/3D or grid-based designs, plus an additional method using several sheets of paper to build a 3D snowflake.

# Make Paper Snowflakes Create six-pointed snowflakes with a round futed coffee filter 1.Flatten the filter and fold itin half. 2.Fold in halfand pinchjustnear the corner, not thewhole side. 3.Starting atpinch, fold overone third of the coffee filter. This is the challenging partand students may need helpwith this. 4.Fold the filter in half. 5.Fold in half again. 6.Cut out shapes from thesides.Unfold to reveal thesnowfake. Challenge capable studentsby asking them to cutout snowflakes with arecognizable shape like asnowman. Support struggling students by giving themapaper clipped prefoldedcoffee filter. # Make Crystal Snowflakes Combine chemistry and meteorology by making borax crystal snowflakes! For one snowflake, you willneed:container for creating thesolution,4Tborax,adrinkingstraw,24”string,white chenille stem,400ml ofhot water(slightly more than one and a half cups) Make the solution Pour 4Tof borax into very hot waterand stiruntil the boraxisdissolved.Allow the solution to cool slightly and pour into the cup. Make the snowflake Note:Our chenille stem is black forillustration purposes only. Cut the chenille stem into threesections. One section shouldbe slightly longer than the othertwo sections.Twist one piecearound a second piece.Twist the long piece around these first two pieces.Manipulate them to create a six-sided star shape.Tryto make the points even.Trimming them is OK. Tie a piece ofstring to one branch of the stem about one-half-nchfrom the center.Wrap the string around each branch of the snowfake, connecting allthebranches of the snowfake. When you comeback to the branch you started with, wind the stringalong thebranch toan inch from the center.Wrap thestring around eachbranch ofthe snowflake about an inch from the center, connectingallthebranches of the snowflake. Make aknow the end of thestring tomake aloop.Hang the snowfake in the cup ofboraxsolution. Wait several hours and you will have acrystal snowflake! ## Make a Virtual Snowflake http://www.zefrank.com/snowfake/ This site allows youto see the snowflake still, rotated twodimensionally, and three dimensionally. http://www.addictinggames.com/createasnowflake.html This site begins by folding and then cutting a virtual piece of paperinto a snowfake following directions from the student.Studentscan save their snowfake and e-mail itto family or friends. http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/symmetry/snow.htm Click ina grid of triangles to create a snowfake.Option-delete thegrid and create a snowflake withoutit. http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/symmetry/symm3.htm Just like the site above, with two triangular grids.Students canchoose colors with this option. http://www.furrious.com/ Make a snowflake after choosing a shape.Snowstorm soundeffects. ## Another Way to Make a Snowflake http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-3D-Paper-SnowfakeUse six sheets of paperto create a3D snowflake. | | | | --- | --- | | | | | * | | | | | | --- | --- | | | | | | | | 1000 | 1

FAQs

How do you make a six-pointed paper snowflake from a coffee filter?

Flatten and fold the filter in half, then pinch near a corner and fold one-third over. Fold in half again, then fold again, cut shapes from the sides, and unfold to reveal the snowflake.

What supplies are needed to make borax crystal snowflakes?

You need a container, 4T borax, a drinking straw (as referenced), 24” string, white chenille stem, and about 400 ml of hot water to dissolve the borax and grow the crystals.

What do the virtual snowflake links provide?

They allow creating snowflakes interactively by following folding/cutting directions in a virtual paper activity, generating snowflakes in 2D and 3D views, or building designs by clicking triangle grids with options to remove the grid and choose colors.
