Why is laser pointer certification required for astronomy outreach?

Laser pointer use is federally regulated. Misuse can cause blindness and the laser can be aimed at aircraft, so users must be certified for astronomy purposes.

What responsibilities do centres have for certified laser pointer users?

Centres must provide training sessions, track certified centre members, issue certification cards, and approve events where laser pointers will be used, using a defined approval protocol.

What must a certified user carry and report after an event?

Users must carry a membership card, a centre-issued certification card, a RASC Certificate of Insurance, and a Transport Canada authorization. They must fill out the usage reporting form within 30 days so Transport Canada records all uses.
