JOB-ROTATION ROSTERS FOR MECHANISED OPERATIONS provides guidance for building continuous job-rotation schedules in mechanised logging. It outlines how to gather crew input on preferred working hours, secure accurate machinery utilisation and hourly productivity figures, and exchange experiences with other crews. The checklist covers shift goals, machine utilisation planning, workload assessment, multi-skilling and work enlargement, paired maintenance, planned leave and sick-leave adaptation, travel and weekend/early/late work considerations, and safety and health routines to reduce occupational overuse syndrome.

R E P OR T ISSN 1174-1406 Volume 22 No.101997 Liro copyright1997 # JOB-ROTATION ROSTERS FOR MECHANISED OPERATIONS There is no universal work-shift schedule for a mechanisedlogging crew. There are many different needs which make itessential to draw up several schedules. With a continuousjob-rotation roster it is possible to utilise the most expensivemachines more effectively.Job rotation, involving bothmachine work and manual work, also benefits the health ofthe machine operators by reducing the risk of gettingoccupational overuse syndrome. When formulating shiftschedules,it is crucial that all members in the crew give theiropinions on preferred working hours.Experience has shownthat it is best to continue the discussions until all in the crewagree with and accept the new work-shift schedule. When formulating the work-shift schedules,it is importantto have accurate key figures for your machinery's utilisationper annum and productivity per hour.Another importantissue is to exchange experiences with other logging crews. This will give you more ideas and motivation to keep ondeveloping your work or your business. This report will help you to create job-rotation rosters whichwill give a high and sustainable performance in mechanisedlogging operations.Start with the goals of your business anddiscuss them with your crew and your family. It will take timeto find the optimal schedules. It is a process that also developsthe crew,as high performance rosters involve workenlargement,multi-skilling and increased responsibility takenby each member of the crew. ● A guide for designing work-shift rosters ● A method to assess the work load in different shiftschedules. Can you increase the productivity and productive time perhour instead of working more hours? Can you avoid workingat early and late hours through working a continuous daytime job-rotation roster? Job rotarion How can a productive and fair job-rotation roster be achieved? There may be a need for motivation, training and education. The principal employer must actively contribute when thecrew is enlarging the work-tasks. Make a list of each worker's skills.Multi-skilling benefitseveryone and allows for more sustainable production.Initiaterotation between machine work and manual work such asfelling, logmaking and audit. What is the minimum timerequirement for the manual work?Make a list of all thesetasks. Work enlargement and job rotation are easier to implementwhen the same contractor owns all the machines involvedin a logging operation. Division of labour, the contractor's role Decide who has responsibility for each work-task.Determinethe division of labour between the contractor and the crew. What kind of administrative work can be done at the worksite? What information and support do the crew need? Machine maintenance Plan for maintenance to be done in pairs during the middleof the day.It is important to decide who has responsibilityfor maintenance, especially when there are several operatorsusing the same machine. Is there a system for assistanceand spare parts at night

FAQs

How should shifts be formulated for a mechanised logging crew?

Shift formulation should include crew input on preferred working hours. Discussions should continue until all members agree with and accept the new work-shift schedule.

What key figures are needed when planning work-shift schedules?

Accurate key figures are required for machinery utilisation per annum and productivity per hour, including capacity calculations for machines and manual operations for common haul distances and situations.

How does job rotation support safety and health?

Job rotation reduces the risk of occupational overuse syndrome by involving both machine work and manual work, and by using routines for safety at night and during weekends.
