IP Ratings Chart - Understand IP Water and Dust Protection Levels

Oct 12, 2026

IP Ratings Chart summarizes the International Protection (IP) system for enclosures, mapping an IP code to specific resistance against solid objects, dust ingress, and water exposure. It explains first and second index numbers with concrete examples such as hand/finger sized solids, dust-proof vs dust-tight behavior, and water protection ranging from dripping and falling drops to spray and powerful jets. Includes framework references to DIN 40050 and IEC-EN 60529 and provides an IP66 example.

Index
Number | Water protection | | | | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | Protected against a solid object
greater than 50 mm (~ 2 in),
such as a hand | | 1 | Protected against vertically falling
drops of water for 10 minutes at a
rate of 1 mm/min | | | | | 2 | Protected against a solid object
greater than 12.5 mm (1/2 in),
such as a finger | | 2 | Protected against diagonally
falling (up to 15-deg) drops of
water for 10 minutes at a rate of
3 mm/min | | | | | 3 | Protected against a solid object
greater than 2.5 mm, such as a
screwdriver | | 3 | Protected against diagonally
falling (up to 60-deg) spray
(from a hose) for 5 minutes at

object greater than 1 mm,
such as a wire | | 4 | Protected against water

continuous submersion
at a depth of 3 m | | | | | | | | 9k | Protection against:
-water jet at 0, 30, 60 & 90-deg for 30 seconds each

FAQs

What do the first and second index numbers in an IP rating represent?

The first index number describes protection against solid objects and dust ingress, while the second index number describes protection against water exposure.

What does an IP66 rating mean?

An IP66 rating indicates the enclosure is dust-tight and protects against strong jets of water, such as during washdown.

Which standards define the protection framework for IP classes?

The chart states that DIN 40050 and IEC-EN 60529 outline the framework conditions a protection class must guarantee.
