Examines two axonometric projections by Gerrit Rietveld depicting the Schröder House, designed for and with Truus Schröder-Schräder, to explain how architectural illustration shapes meaning through spatial and temporal representation. The study analyzes wire-framed technique, dimensional accuracy, and the strategic role of drawing rather than text in conveying abstract yet material, functional concepts. It also evaluates contrasting versions and uncertain dating, supported by archival inventory numbers and evidence from museum collections and published reproductions.

Illustrating Architecture: the Spatio-temporal Dimension of Gerrit Rietveld’s Representations of the Schröder House. Desley Luscombe “Architecture is as much bound to its varying means of representation and thus what these means make possible as it is to material possibility.” Andrew Benjamin, in Lars Spuybroek, NOX, p.348. This paper examines two axonometric projections by Gerrit Rietveld that portray the house designed for and in collaboration with Truus Schröder-Schräder. Utilising specific attributes of the technique of the axonometric, Rietveld developed concepts of architecture that were both abstract and yet contingent on architecture’s material and functional requirements. Rather than using text to explain the ideas behind the house Rietveld chose drawing and more specifically the technique of the axonometric, to characterise complex strategies that were fundamental to its distinctive architectural concepts. Axonometric techniques, in maintaining dimensional accuracy, can provide an understanding of architectural design that, unlike perspective or photography, avoid placing the viewer’s experience as the privileged interpretive paradigm. For Rietveld, illustration clearly situated his expectations for architecture’s signification beyond its physical presence. His exploration of architecture’s potential through the axonometric could probably also have been influenced by his reaction to artists like Piet Mondrian who had criticised architecture’s inability to come to terms with “new representation.” The primary illustration to be examined, inv.nr. 004 A 059 (wire-framed in the text to follow) is part of the collection held in the Centraal Museum Utrecht.Figure 1 In this hand drawn, ink on tracing paper illustration, Gerrit Rietveld used axonometric techniques to outline and depict relationships between selected architectural elements and interior furnishings of both upper and lower floors of the Schröder house. Commonly called a wire-framed axonometric, this technique introduces the notion of revealing a viewing subject’s ‘x-ray vision’ on selected elements, plotting in parallel projection the measurability of the orthographic plans, sections and elevations in a single ‘view’. The second illustration is a second version of this wire-framed illustration and also held at the Centraal Museum, inv.nr. 004 A 104 (coloured in the text to follow).Figure 2 It is rendered in colour after the original tracing has been printed on art quality paper using reprographic techniques. This illustration uses gouache or water colour to render surfaces and focuses attention on the upper floor level and exterior while portraying selected furniture and architectural elements in shades of red, blue, yellow, black, white, or grey. Apart from the introduction of colour, the feature that makes this illustration distinct from the original tracing is that it incorporates rigorously repeated and ruled lines spaced at one-millimetre intervals depicting the visible extent of the surface of the upper floor, an inclusion that strategically diminishes the importance of the ground floor, a prominent feature of the wire-framed view. This coloured illustration relies for its creation on early architectural reprographic techniques. Its formation would most likely be the result of Ferro-Gallic printing processes that were widely available in Europe until the 1930s and were able, without the need for complex processes other than a single wash-trough, to produce a positive dark brown line on art-quality paper directly from a tracing paper original. In this process, a pale brown stain was often left on the finished paper. Such staining is evident on the final art paper of the coloured illustration 004 A 104. The dating of both axonometric drawings is uncertain. It has been suggested by current staff at the Rietveld Archive at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht that the drawings may have been made for the 1951 ‘De Stijl’ exhibition in the Stedelijk Museu

FAQs

How do axonometric illustrations influence architectural interpretation in this paper?

Axonometric techniques maintain dimensional accuracy and avoid making the viewer’s experience the privileged interpretive paradigm, allowing architectural design to be read through representational structure rather than perspective or photography.

What distinguishes the two main wire-framed illustrations discussed?

The primary drawing outlines architectural elements and interior furnishings across floors, while the coloured version focuses attention on the upper floor and exterior, using repeated ruled lines at one-millimetre intervals and colour to emphasize specific spatial extents.

Why is the dating of the drawings considered uncertain?

Uncertainty arises from conflicting suggested dates, the existence of similar coloured illustrations with different inventory numbers, and reliance on verbal evidence tied to possible production for major exhibitions around the mid-20th century.
