How to Secure Your Wi-Fi Network - Network Security Controls - Protect Your Router - Disable Remote Access

Sep 16, 2026

Secure home and work Wi‑Fi networks by applying strong encryption (prefer WPA3, upgrade from WEP when possible) and ensuring encryption is enabled on the router. Improve safety during setup by limiting network access to approved devices and understanding MAC-based filtering limits. Harden the router by changing stock passwords and unique SSIDs, keeping firmware updated, and disabling remote access to prevent outside control and traffic diversion. These steps reduce ransomware, privacy invasion, and data loss risks.

Continue What are the network security controls Given how much valuable information we entrust to computers today , it's more important than ever to make sure that your work and home networks are secure. All it takes is one crack in your Wi-Fi armor to harm your system , leading to ransomware , invasion of privacy , and invaluable loss of personal data. Learn how to secure your Wi-Fi network today , and rest easier knowing you've prevented future outrage. Why should I secure my Wi-Fi network? Wi-Fi works by broadcasting signals from your modem via a wireless router up to a few hundred meters away , allowing compatible devices to connect to the internet. While this is undoubtedly a major convenience for work and home networks , it also raises the unpleasant possibility that cybercriminals can harm the network and gain access to your devices and information. If any crime is committed using your PC , such as spamming or harassment , the investigation will lead back to your computer , potentially putting you at legal risk. However , as long as the wireless signal is sufficiently encrypted , or rearranged into coded transmissions , your network should be safe from digital eavesdropping , intruders , and other malefactors. There are two types of encryption commonly used on routers , computers , and other devices: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) . Most current and strong encryption is known as WPA3 , although weaker WPA2 is more common. Either you have to protect you from all but the most determined cybercriminals , although WPA3 will give you greater security against the latest threats. If you're still using WEP to protect your Wi-Fi network , even the most common hacking programs can pose a threat , so consider upgrading your router to one with WPA2 or WPA3 included. How to improve your Wi-Fi security It should be noted that although many routers now come with WPA3 encryption as standard , some do not have encryption enabled right out of the box. Fortunately , enabling encryption is a simple matter of following the instructions manual of the router or the manufacturer's website. In addition , there are several steps that must be taken during router setup to minimize the risk to your network , although these settings can also be adjusted at a later time. Limit Wi-Fi access First and foremost , you should consider enabling any available option to limit the number of devices that can access your network , which you can do either over your computer's Wi-Fi or directly through your router's app. While it may be convenient to get a slow stove connected to the you see online , Internet of Things (IoT) devices can serve as an easy entry point for hackers. Each device will be given an individual Media Address Control ( MAC) that will allow your approved device to access Wi-Fi while blocking the device without a MAC—even if it's a hacker MAC addresses were spoofed before , so don't just rely on this feature to secure your network. Protect your router Because your router is the main point of contact between your network and the internet , you need to make sure it has been well secured as the main form of your cyber defenses. Failure to secure your router can allow hackers to control it , divert your web traffic , and steal personal and financial info. If you still use the generic network name and password the router comes up with , you could be in some very serious trouble and not even know it. PC users can check the encryption status of their router by right-clicking the Internet Access toolbar icon and selecting Properties. From there , scroll down to Properties at the bottom of the window , and you'll be able to check which type of security is running , which should be WPA2 at a minimum. FAQs

Why should I secure my Wi‑Fi network?

Wi‑Fi enables devices to connect over a distance, creating a chance for attackers to access your network and information. Weak security can lead to privacy breaches, legal risk from misuse, and personal data loss.

What encryption types should I use for my router?

WPA and WEP are common encryption methods, with WPA3 being the strongest and WPA2 widely used. If your router still uses WEP, upgrade to hardware that supports WPA2 or WPA3.

How can I improve Wi‑Fi security during router setup?

Enable encryption if it isn’t already on, limit the number of devices that can access the network, change the default router password and SSID, and update firmware regularly.
