A Halloween-themed set of preschool learning center activities focused on building foundational number and letter skills while strengthening fine-motor control. Students practice identifying numbers through spider-themed number matching, developing number sense with daily counting experiences using pumpkin seeds, and forming letter-sound connections through candy letter sorting. Additional centers use name letter matching with hat name strips to recognize alphabet letters in students’ names, plus line tracing or path-following to train small hand muscles for later reading and writing.

Number Recognition Spider Numbers Math Center Recognizing numbers and developing a strong sense of number is an essential building block for early childhood mathematics. Daily practice and playing with numbers will help strengthen a child’s number sense. Objective: • The students will identify numbers. Procedure: 1. Tape the web pictures to the front of buckets. 2. Students select a spider from the pile put it on the matching web. • Alternatively, tape the web pictures onto the floor. Provide a small black beanbag or rubber toy spider. When the students select a number, they will toss the beanbag or the spider onto the corresponding web. Begin with just a few numbers and add more as the needs of your students grow. It needs to be practiced daily and in a variety of meaningful ways. Math Center Objectives: • The students will demonstrate one-to-one correspondence. • The students will count sets and make combinations of objects to create each set. Procedure: 1. Print, laminate, and cut out the pumpkin, numbers, and seeds. 2. Students choose a number from the pile and place that many seeds on the pumpkin. You can also use dried pumpkin seeds in place of the seed pictures! • Alternatively, bring in a few small pumpkins for exploration and counting. While the teacher cuts open the pumpkins, encourage the students to explore the pumpkins with all their senses (see the seeds, feel the flesh, smell the pumpkin, etc.) . Provide small plates with the number 10 marked on each. Students should countout 10 seeds and put them on each plate. Once ten plates are filled, discuss how many seeds you’ve counted so far. Have students estimate how many more seeds they think are in the the pumpkin. *Click here for more pumpkin exploration ideas. Objective: • The students will begin to make letter-sound connections. Procedure: 1. Print, cut, and laminate the letter and candy cards. 2. Place letters on a table and the candy in a bag. Students pull out the candy pictures, one at a time, and sort them to their corresponding letter. • Alternatively, provide Halloween candy bucketsand write each letter on the front of the bucket. Put the pictures in empty candy bags. Students will pick a card out of the candy bag and place it in the corresponding bucket. Matching letters is a great way to reinforce the Literacy Center concept of alphabetic principles. Objective: • Students will recognize letters of the alphabet in their name. Procedure: 1. Write each student’s name on a sentence strip. Print a set of hats with the letters of the student’s name. 2. Lay the name strips and hat letters on a table for the students to match. Attach a small pocket or envelope to the back of the sentence strip to store the hat letters. (It’s also a good idea to write the student’s initials on the back of each hat in case they get mixed up.) • Alternatively, use a plastic pumpkin bucket filled with paper strips or fall leaves (silk leaves work great!) . Put the student’s alphabet hatsin the bucket. The students create their names by searching the bucket and arranging the letters accordingly. Recording Sheet ©Play to Learn Preschool | | | --- | |

FAQs

What is the main goal of the Spider Numbers activity?

Students identify numbers by selecting the matching spider card and placing it on the corresponding web, supporting strong early number sense.

How do students practice counting in the Pumpkin Seeds activity?

Students choose a number and place that many seeds on a pumpkin, demonstrating one-to-one correspondence and counting sets to create combinations.

What do children do in the Candy Letters activity?

Children sort candy pictures one at a time to match the corresponding letter, starting letter-sound connections through repeated practice.

How does the fine motor activity support later reading and writing?

Students trace lines or cut dotted paths, strengthening the small muscles in their hands that are essential for handwriting readiness.
