Decompose a fraction into a sum of unit fractions and a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way using area models, length models, and equations. Add and subtract fractions, including mixed numbers with like denominators, by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions, including mixed numbers by writing equations from a visual representation of the problem. Additional/Supporting Standards: NC.4.NF.1 Explain why a fraction is equivalent to another fraction by using area and length fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. As you read, focus on the addition that is modeled in the book. Next, ask if students have ever been to a bakery before. Ask what types of items are sold at a bakery. This helps get students thinking about sweets and what they can find at a bakery. Present the Problem: “You own a bakery that specializes in fraction cookies. Customers place orders from all over the country for your unique cookies. You recently received the orders shown on your student sheet. Before making the cookies to fill the order, you need to confirm the total amount of toppings you will be using for each order. Using the circle templates provided, show how you would create each cookie order with the correct fractional amounts of toppings.” You may want to go over how to use the templates provided to help students read and understand the task. Do not model how to solve the task or create the cookies – allow students to figure this out. Explore: Creating Cookies (20-45 minutes) Students will explore creating cookie orders by using the cookie templates provided to complete the order form. Students will work as partners to complete the task. As students are working, make notes to see what strategies and vocabulary students are using as they solve the task. Determine which students should share strategies during the discussion. Ask: How many total cookies will this order require? How do you know? Could you create the order using fewer cookies? Which toppings could you combine to fill this cookie? Which topping occurs the most in this order? Discuss: Discussion (15-20 minutes) After students have completed the cookie order form, gather as a class and discuss the task and information gathered during the task.
