Campbell RATIONALE: The goal of this course is to assist students in gaining an understanding of the principles and concepts related to artistic, musical, and physical movement education for elementary school teachers. This course will focus on strategies to integrate art, music and movement in the teaching of concepts and content. OBJECTIVES: This course will endeavor to: Emphasize the standards based art, music and movement education as adopted by the DOE: HTSB Standards 1-10. Aid participants in the development of basic artistic, musical and movement skills through studio art experiences in various media and techniques, as well as in music and movement activities: HTSB Standard 3-7. Explore and utilize the elements and principles of visual design: HTSB Standards 4, 5 Explore the five key areas of music education as relevant to elementary grades: HTSB Standards 1-8. Direct participants in providing an academic equilibrium for children by exposure to the arts: HTSB Standards 1-8. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students are required to participate in activities. Students will be graded on the following (please be aware that you are being graded on effort and participation not on artistic/musical “talents”): Attendance and participation (10@5) 50 Chapter summaries/reflections (9 posts@5) 45 Weekly assignments (9 @5) 45 Integrated Lesson Plan extending children’s literature 35 Art/Music reviews (2@ 10) 20 Art Research Lesson Plan 18 Art Research power point presentation 70 Course Portfolio 50 Grand Total 333 A=333 B=303 C=273 ATTENDANCE: University policy requires students to attend all class meetings of courses for which they are registered. If an emergency prevents you from attending, the instructor should be informed ahead of time. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Plagiarism is a serious offense. Plagiarism is the offering of someone else’s work as your own. Plagiarism may include but is not limited to the following: Complete or partial copying directly from a published or unpublished source without proper acknowledgment to the author. Minor changes in working or syntax are not sufficient to avoid charges of plagiarism. Proper acknowledgment of the source of the text is mandatory. Paraphrasing the work of another without proper author acknowledgment. Submitting as one’s own original work (however freely given or purchased) including the original exam, research paper, manuscript, report, computer file or other assignment that has been prepared by another individual. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION: Students are free to express different opinions and views than those presented in the course but these diverse views must be grounded in research. Students are required to know the material presented in the class whether or not they agree with the specific bodies of knowledge set forth in the course. Students are expected to maintain academic standards set forth on the course syllabus. INCOMPLETES: Incompletes may be given if the student is unable to complete a portion of the work due to circumstances beyond his/her control. The student and instructor must sign the incomplete contract. It will specify when the work must be completed. The maximum time allowable to complete the work is 90 days. If the work is not submitted by the agreed upon date, the incomplete will revert to the grade the student would have earned that is specified on the incomplete form.
