Inventory management in many businesses remains largely manual, often relying on spreadsheets with limited innovation and resulting in difficulties in monitoring stocks and meeting demand. This research designs and implements a web-based inventory control system for an SME case study, using QR codes and barcodes to track products from purchase to point of sale, transfers between stores, and delivery to customers. The system provides daily, up-to-date inventory information for corporate offices and enables role-based access for users such as store managers to streamline ordering, monitor cross-store transactions, improve customer service, and increase revenue.

In recent years, it has been observed that inventory data of most businesses are manually recorded into a spreadsheet and maintained with little or no technological innovation which has a lot of shortcomings in our modern world as it has shown to be challenging to successfully monitor inventories. In retail industries, inventory management poses a number of challenges. In order to meet client demand, companies must maintain inventory in warehouses. The goal of inventory management is to determine the right amount of inventory to meet demand while avoiding overstocks. In this research work, a Web-based Inventory Control System has been designed to improve on the shortcomings of the previous system. The Web-based system was created with tracking methods like QR codes and Barcodes in mind to track products as they travel from point of purchase to point of sale, between stores (in the case of emergency supplies from nearby stores), inside individual stores, and lastly directly to customers. On a daily basis, it also delivers precise up-todate information to the corporate office on the inventory levels of the individual stores. It also allows specific users (for example, store managers, heads of operations, and so on) to access the system at any time from various locations to perform different functions. The inventory control system is a tremendous boost to the store managersand corporate office as it helps the store to find items that should be ordered first thereby spending less time on inventory management functions. It also helps the corporate office to efficiently monitor transactions that take place across multiple stores. As a result, customer service and customer satisfaction will surely increase, resulting in increased revenue for the company. 1. Introduction The broad business problem is that a company's operational effectiveness is significantly impacted by high quantities of working capital spent in inventory. The fundamental issue is that some managers lack inventory management solutions. As a result, businesses must devise techniques for monitoring and sustaining their product inventory levels [1] . For this reason, some businesses employ a web-based inventory management system. A web-based system is one that runs on a web server and can be accessed by browsers from a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. To show information to users, a web-based system employs a combination of server-side and client-side programs [2] . An Inventory Control System is a software program that K.B Erameh, Benedict I. Odoh /NIPES Journal of Science and Technology Research 3(3) 2021 pp. 211-219 supports companies in managing their inventory. Data will be maintained in databases using webbased inventory control systems which help to organize entered data for fast recovery [3] . These web-based data management systems use a web browser for the coordination of information over the internet or company intranet [4] . This system covers the procurement, delivery, receipt, tracking, storage and warehousing, turnover and reorder [5] . Therefore, an inventory control system is

FAQs

What problem does the proposed web-based inventory control system address?

It addresses the shortcomings of manual spreadsheet-based inventory recording, which makes it challenging to monitor inventories effectively and meet client demand while avoiding overstocking.

How does the system track products as they move through the supply chain?

It uses QR codes and barcodes to track products from point of purchase to point of sale, between stores when needed, inside stores, and finally to customers.

Who can access the system and what benefits does it provide?

Specific users such as store managers and heads of operations can access it from various locations to perform tasks. It helps identify items to order first, reduces time spent on inventory activities, and enables corporate monitoring across multiple stores.
