Body Condition Score of Dogs - 1-9 Scale Description

Oct 12, 2026

Body Condition Score defines a 1 to 9 visual/palpation rating system for estimating body fat and muscle condition in dogs. Scores 1–2 indicate under-ideal thinness with ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones, and bony prominences easily seen, with little to no detectable fat and obvious muscle loss. Scores 3–5 represent ideal condition with visible and/or palpable ribs, an obvious waist, and abdominal tuck. Scores 6–9 describe over-ideal to severely over-ideal obesity, where ribs become increasingly difficult to palpate, fat covers lumbar and tail-base areas, the waist disappears, and abdominal distention may occur.

FAQs

How are dogs scored from 1 to 9 in the Body Condition Score system?

Dogs are rated based on how ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones, and bony prominences can be seen or palpated, plus the presence of fat cover, waist visibility, and abdominal tuck.

What signs indicate an under-ideal body condition (scores 1–2)?

Scores 1–2 show easily visible or palpable ribs and pelvic bones with minimal or no discernible fat, along with obvious loss of muscle mass.

What changes appear in over-ideal obesity (scores 6–9)?

Ribs become harder or impossible to palpate under heavier fat cover, fat deposits accumulate over the lumbar area and base of the tail, the waist disappears, and abdominal tuck may be absent with possible abdominal distention.
