Oct 12, 2026

BAR-CHART(GANTT CHART)PLANNING explains what a Gantt chart is and how it visualizes project activities against time using bars for start date, duration, and end date. The material details key benefits for planning, including clarity across multiple tasks, improved communication, motivation, coordination, time management, flexibility, manageability, efficiency in resource use, and accountability. It also highlights drawbacks such as complexity, bar length not reflecting workload, the need for frequent updates, difficulty viewing on one sheet, and limited visibility of the critical path.

A Gantt chart,commonly used in project management,is one of the most popular anduseful ways of showing activities (tasks)displayed against time.On the left of thechart is a list of the activities and along the top is a suitable time scale.Each activityis represented by a bar;the position and length of the bar reflects the start date,duration and end date of the activity.This figure shows an example of a Bar-chart(Gantt chart): | Task Name | | Q12009 | | | Q22009 | | | Q32009 | | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | | Dec 08 | Jan 09 | Feb 09 | Mar 09 | Apr 09 | May 09 | Jun '09 | Jul '09 | Aug | | Planning | | | | | | | | | | | Research | | | | | | | | | | | Design | | | | | | | | | | | Implementation | | | | | | | | | | | Follow up | | | | | | | | | | # BENEFITS OF USING BAR-CHART(GANTT CHART)TECHNIQUE FOR PROJECT PLANNING -Clarity:Gantt chart has the ability to show and clarify multipletasks and timelines. -Communication:It is a visual method to help project teammembers understand task progress. -Motivation:Gantt charts offer project teams the ability tofocus work at the front of,or at the tail end of a task timeline. -Coordination:project managers use these charts to breakdown projects into manageable sets of tasks. -Creativity:The use of Gantt charts often encourages new partnerships thatmight not have evolved under traditional task assignment systems. -Time Management:Time scheduling is considered as one of the majorbenefits of Gantt charts -Flexibility:It offers a view of project which can help team members adjustchanges. -Manageability:By using Gantt charts,project managers can make morefocused,effective decisions about resources and timetables. -Efficiency:Visualizing resource usage during projects allows managers tomake better use of people,places,and things. -Accountability:Using Gantt charts during critical projects allows both projectmanagers and participants to track team progress. # DISADVANTAGES OF USING BAR-CHART (GANTTCHART)TECHNIQUE FOR PROJECT PLANNING -They can become very complex -The length of the bar does not indicate the amountof work -They all the time need to be updated -Difficult to see on one sheet of paper -The Critical path(C.P)cannot be clearly indicated EX.1/USING THE DETAILS SHOWN BELOW,BUILD ABAR-CHART TO FIND THE PROJECT’S TOTAL DURATION. | Activity | A | B | C | D | E | F | H | K | G | 1 | J | M | | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Duration

FAQs

What does a Gantt chart show in project planning?

A Gantt chart shows project activities against time. Each activity appears as a bar whose position and length reflect the start date, duration, and end date.

What are the main benefits of using Gantt charts?

The document lists benefits including clarity of tasks and timelines, better communication of progress, motivation, coordination, time management, flexibility, manageability for resource decisions, efficiency in resource visualization, and accountability for team progress.

What disadvantages should be considered when using Gantt charts?

The document notes that Gantt charts can become very complex, bar length may not indicate the amount of work, they require continuous updating, are hard to see on one sheet, and do not clearly indicate the critical path (C.P.).
