Uploaded by asba

This document provides a comprehensive educational guide to the twenty common amino acids that are encoded by the human genetic code. It classifies these essential building blocks of life into various categories such as aliphatic, aromatic, acidic, basic, hydroxylic, and sulfur-containing. The text details the specific DNA codons, three-letter abbreviations, and single-letter codes for each amino acid. Additionally, it explains the distinction between essential and non-essential amino acids and addresses the specific cases of Selenocysteine, as well as the nomenclature for asparagine/aspartic acid and glutamine/glutamic acid combinations. This reference is designed for biological and chemical clarity, serving as an essential resource for understanding protein synthesis and genetic encoding in living organisms.

FAQs

What are the two types of amino acids based on dietary requirements?

Amino acids are categorized into 'essential' amino acids, which must be obtained through diet, and 'non-essential' amino acids, which the human body can synthesize.

How many amino acids does the human genetic code directly encode?

The human genetic code directly encodes 20 common amino acids, although over 500 different amino acids are found in nature.

What are the codes used when distinguishing between asparagine/aspartic acid and glutamine/glutamic acid is difficult?

In such cases, the codes 'asx' (B) and 'glx' (Z) are used to represent these pairs, respectively.
