A Frank Discussion on Lessons Learned from Adopting and Applying NASA-STD-6030 for Spaceflight Systems - Agenda and Objectives

Sep 11, 2026

This presentation presents lessons learned from adopting and applying NASA-STD-6030 for spaceflight additive manufacturing systems. It outlines how to tailor NASA-STD-6030 additive manufacturing requirements through the AMCP, describes generation of AMCPs for global, program-specific, and part-specific cases, and summarizes early adoption observations and common requirement-interpretation issues. It also provides a recommended programmatic AM workflow aligned to PDR/IDR/CDR phases, and highlights guidance needs around qualification, certification, and part classification decisions.

How to Start the Tailoring Process? • Understand the project requirements and the maturity of the process you are planning to use • May require gap assessment with part agnostic requirements (e.g. , process, post-process, maintenance) • When does tailoring occur? – Programmatic Tailoring – Cognizant Engineering Organization (CEO) Tailoring – Any tailoring should be finalized and/or approved within the timeframe of the first major programmatic design review How are tailored AMRs documented? • The AMCP documents the as-tailored requirement with rationale and implementation methods for each AMR listed in NASA-STD-6030. • Note that NASA AM Certification SMEs have found that most mature aerospace AM programs can meet the intent of most NASA-STD-6030 AMRs as written without the need for tailoring The AMCP is the foundation of successful additive manufacturing implementation 5 Recommended Programmatic AM Workflow A Frank Discussion on Lessons Learned from Adopting and Applying NASA STD-6030 for Spaceflight Systems Recommended Programmatic AM Workflow Discussion with AM engineers for build feasibility PDR: Preliminary Design Review IDR: Interim

FAQs

What does tailoring an AMR mean in the context of NASA-STD-6030?

Tailoring is the process of revising a shall statement in a NASA-STD-6030 AMR so it is accepted by the reviewing authority.

How can an AMCP be generated for different scopes?

The AMCP generation can be categorized as global (enterprise level), program-specific (for a single program), or part-specific point solutions (one material and one AM component).

How is the recommended AM workflow aligned to program design reviews?

The recommended AM workflow pairs AM review milestones with existing program reviews such as PDR, IDR, and CDR, and uses early requirement discussions to reduce compliance issues.
