Introduction to core concepts of organizing form in three-dimensional space, focusing on manipulating materials and using process as a way of thinking. Students explore the form/space relationship through representational, non-objective, and abstract imagery, supported by historical references. The course develops technique across sculpture methods, digital 3D practices, and safe studio operations, culminating in planning, iteration, documentation, and public presentation of multiple projects.

3-D FOundations | ADS 102.5| Spring 2026 | 3 Credits Instructor Name: Chet Geiselman Course information Course Description: Introduction to the fundamental concepts of organizing form in three-dimensional space. Emphasis on the concepts of material manipulation and process as a form of thinking. Utilizes a variety of common 3D media and basic processes aimed at developing creativity in 3D problem solving. Course Overview: This course will allow students to explore and experience the third dimension and build a deeper understanding of the form/space relationship and its ability to convey meaning and idea through exploration of various three-dimensional media and process. The students will explore representational, non-objective, and abstract imagery, historical references will be introduced throughout the course of the semester in relation to formal and conceptual concerns being presented. Course Objectives: Demonstrate a facility with a wide range of traditional and non-traditional materials Use varied techniques for sculpture, such as subtractive, additive, casting, relief, and assemblage. Develop ideas as the result of the interactions with material and concepts Understand the relationships between intent, content, context and meaning Develop project through planning, research, iteration, brainstorming and materials testing Recognize the ways digital technologies can be used in contemporary 3D practice. Recognize the physical and chemical hazards of artmaking Use the Wood Shop, light power and hand tools safely Use varied critique strategies to develop responses to, analyzes and interprets artwork Document and present work publicly Course Content: Define form and space through line Textured surfaces Low versus high relief Planning through drawing, prototyping and maquette Creating multiples/casting Non-objective imagery Define form and negative space using plane Shop safety and tool orientation Digital practices including sketching and printing Scaling Using power and hand tools Casting Creating material connections Soft sculpture Installation and site specificity Permanence vs Impermanence Document three-dimensional work Course Modality / Structure: The format for this class will combine lecture, demonstration, studio work time, group discussion, and critique. There will be a Course Calendar located on the Canvas course site, which includes all weekly tasks, assignments, and due dates. This calendar will be updated as the semester progresses. Course Time Commitment: It is expected that students will spend approximately 2 hours of study time outside of class for every one hour in class. Since this is a 3-credit studio, you should expect to study an average of 6 hours outside of class each week. Course materials You will find a materials list in our Canvas course. As we progress through the semester, we will discuss other potential materials that you may choose to experiment with. Course Costs Students will be charged material fees for 2 projects in this class. One is $25.00 glass fee for the glass casting project we’ll do at the Glick Center for Glass. This fee covers not only the material, but also the use of the annealing kilns. The second fee of $10.00ish goes toward wood purchased at Lowe’s for the bas-relief assignment and wire for the wire project. The total amount charged to your bursar bill for this class will be $35.00ish. Individual students will be responsible for purchases for items such as paint, paint brushes, some wood, etc. Local Suppliers: Art Mart, HYPERLINK "https://www.artmartmuncie.net/" \t "_blank" https://www.artmartmuncie.net, 409 N Martin St #2, Muncie, IN 47304 Toys Forever- Models and Hobbies, 300 S Walnut St, Muncie, IN 47305 Harbor Freight, 1413 W McGalliard Rd #4, Muncie, IN 47304 Lowe’s, 4401 W Clara Ln, Muncie, IN 47304 Menards, 3401 N.
