YEAR 8 ART + DESIGN - KNOWLEDGE ORGANISER 1 - Perspective

Oct 28, 2026

Year 8 Art + Design Knowledge Organiser 1 focuses on perspective as an art technique for creating three-dimensional illusions on a two-dimensional surface. It explains key vocabulary including horizontal and vertical, horizon line, vanishing point, and the idea of three dimensional form. The organiser introduces one-point perspective using a single vanishing point, then covers two-point perspective with two vanishing points. It also links perspective to design and architecture through the Bauhaus movement and suggests further study and video reminders to review and revise skills.

YEAR 8 ART + DESIGN – KNOWLEDGE ORGANISER 1. Perspective. Perspective in Art: A technique used to create a three-dimensional illusion (giving depth and space) on a two-dimensional surface, like in the paintings below. Other Key Vocabulary: Horizontal: Parallel to the horizon line. Vertical: At a right angle to the horizontal. Vanishing Point: The point at which all parallel lines ina perspective drawing appear to meet. Three dimensional: having or appearing to have length, breadth and depth. Architecture: he art and practice od designing and constructing buildings. | One-point perspective: A drawing method that shows how things appear to get smaller the further away they get. All lines meet at a single point on the horizon line called the vanishing point. | | | --- | --- | One-point perspective. Vanishing point. Two-point perspective. Two point perspective: A similar drawing technique that uses two vanishing points to create the illusion of a three-dimensional space. Horizon line. Perspective drawing in design and architecture: The Bauhaus is a German art and design movement which lasted from 1919-1933. Its goal was to merge art and technology to create designs which were functional and could be easily mass produced. Bauhaus design is often abstract, angular, and geometric, with little ornamentation. FAQs

What is perspective in art and design?

Perspective is a technique that creates a three-dimensional illusion on a two-dimensional surface by showing depth and space.

How does one-point perspective work?

In one-point perspective, all lines meet at a single point on the horizon line called the vanishing point, and objects appear smaller the further away they are.

What is the difference between one-point and two-point perspective?

Two-point perspective uses two vanishing points to create the illusion of three-dimensional space, while one-point perspective uses only one vanishing point.
