SOULE’S SYNONYMS is easy—you don't haveto be a puzzle solver or a detective to find theword you want in“Soule's Synonyms.”Wordsare arranged alphabetically and each word's syno-nyms appear beside it.You merely find theword that's LIKE the one you want, and therebeside it IS the word you want. SOULE’S SYNONYMS is authoritative—Pro-fessor Alfred D.Sheffield, editor of the New Edi-tion of “Soule's Synonyms,”was one of the editorsof the New Webster's Dictionary. He is a Pro-fessor of English Composition at WellesleyCollege. # The Technique ofNovel Writing by Basil Hogarth A tradition has been allowed to arise, more by default than by deliberate inten-tion,that the novel possesses no technique;that its craft inherits no secrets;that,in thephrase of Henry James,it is a“sprawlinginvertebrate,"a freak of literary creation.Of late years, however, critics and writershave come to realize that the novel has asdefinite a technique as any other form offiction. SOULE’S SYNONYMS is modern—because ithas just been completed, the New Edition of“Soule's Synonyms”is as up-to-date as it ishumanly possible to make it. The Trusty Steed for Those Who Ride with WordsSoule'sDICTIONARYof In this book an attempt has been madeto indicate and to analyse the componentelements of the modern novel,to reduce thewriting of a novel to a definite literary ex-ercise,and to consider such of the technicalprocesses as can be divined from a study ofthe most representative work of contem-porary novelists.
