Writing in the Professions provides an outline, instructional materials, and suggested assignments for an advanced undergraduate composition course focused on expository writing in work settings. The course emphasizes composing as a process, including how students write for different audiences and purposes, and how critical reading, clear thinking, and effective writing connect. Students practice composing and reviewing multiple document types, analyzing real-world audiences beyond the classroom, and conducting empirical document evaluation. The semester or quarter follows a cyclical three-level model and includes chapters and appendixes for planning through evaluation.
